About US:
Justice Centres Uganda (JCU) is a Project of the Justice Law and Order Sector(JLOS) hosted and supervised by the Judiciary to provide Legal Aid. The Justice Centres are a one stop-stop shop with a broad range of legal aid services to all categories of vulnerable people within the community, identified through a means and merits test. Some of these services include; legal representation, alternative dispute resolution, referrals, awareness creation and outreach, as well as psychosocial support. The model used seeks to bridge the gap between the demand and supply sides of justice while at the same time empowering individuals and communities to claim their rights and demand for policy change. Justice Centres Uganda operates offices in Kampala, Mengo, Tororo, Lira, Hoima, Masaka, Jinja and Fortportal; serving the Central, Eastern, Northern and Bunyoro regions respectively in Uganda.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Receiving walk-in and toll free clients
- Follow up on files allocated
- Mediate and conclude at least one case a week
- Tasked with drafting Legal Opinions and Documents for each case assigned
- Regularly update all cases assigned and report to supervisor on a weekly basis.
- Attend weekly meetings held at the Justice Centres
- Write success stories on each of the concluded cases assigned.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The Legal Volunteers should hold Bachelor’s Degree in Laws from an accredited Institution.
- Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice – LDC and looking forward to enrolment
- Previous experience from Internship training/Clerkship with a Law Firm or legal aid service provider is an added advantage.
- Proficiency in both Oral and Written English is essential.
- Knowledge of legal aid service provision in Uganda
- Good writing skills
- Good communication and presentation skills.
- Dedication to working for and with the poor
- Ability to mobilize communities for Outreach Sessions.
- Proven team building skills.
