Aksum University Admission Requirements

BA admission requirements: Students who pass university entrance examination in Social Sciences, Natural Sciences and candidates with diploma in related fields from recognized higher learning institutions are eligible to join the department.

MA admission requirements: Archaeology is a multi discipline venture. Therefore, students who hold a Bachelor’s degree from government accredited academic institutions in Ethiopia and abroad with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 and above can apply for admission into MA in archaeology and heritage management.

Students who had obtained a BA degree in history, archaeology, heritage management and conservation, anthropology, geology, linguistics, art and architecture, and tourism management with a GPA of 2.0 and above can apply for admission.

Admission Requirement

For undergraduate program

The department is a program of study that normally takes three years to complete for full time regular students and four to fiveyears for Part time students. The department will admit if the student:

Have been successfully completed preparatory level schools and pass Entrance examination for the University prepared by Ministry of Education.
Have able to pass the standards set by the department.
1. For postgraduate Program

Eligibility:

Those with first degree in Economics, Statistics, Agricultural or Natural Resource Economics, and Geography minor in Economics can be directly admitted
First degree holders in Mathematics, Physics, and Engineering sciences providing the bridge courses of Basic Microeconomics and Basic Macroeconomics.
First degree holders in Business and Economics background such as Management, Accounting, and other related fields providing the bridge courses of Basic Macroeconomics and Quantitative Methods in Economics.
Second degree holders in any discipline providing the bridge courses of Basic Microeconomics and Basic Macroeconomics.

Admission to the Regular Undergraduate Program Year I

Admission to Year I level undergraduate full-time studies shall be processed by the registrar/registrar and granted by the respective departments
Admission at Year I level to the undergraduate degree programs shall be given to students who have successfully completed their preparatory school education and who pass the University entrance examination.
Students with foreign examinations of Equivalent standards (to be worked out by the senate standing committee) of the Ethiopian preparatory school education shall be allowed to sit for the University’s entrance examination for admission.
The University is open to all, but disabled students, female students and those students who completed high school education in disadvantaged regions and who are native of the nationality of the regions or those from a nationality whose participation in Higher Education is low, will be given special attention.

Admission to Graduate Programs

Admission to regular and other graduate programs is processed by the registrar and granted by the respective academic departments/units based on the requirements in the curriculum including entrance examination.
Admission to the masters and PhD graduate programs shall be given to candidates who have successfully completed the academic requirements for the first and second degrees, respectively.
Given the availability of intake capacity admission to a graduate program shall be on competitive basis in line with the admission requirements of the specific curriculum.
A candidate should cover all his/her living and other expenses including accommodation, tuition fees unless the university gives him/her a scholarship.
Admission for regular students may take place twice in a year depending on the number of applicants and available resources in the university.
PhD admission can be done at any time
Transfer may be granted to a qualified student if he/she has successfully completed (has a pass mark, i.e. CGPA of 3.00 and above or its equivalent) a minimum of a semester of graduate study in another University or an institution that has an equivalent standard and met the special requirements of the concerned academic unit. This is granted provided there is enough resource.

Admission to the Distance and Continuing Education Undergraduate and graduate Program

Admission to all undergraduate Distance and Continuing Education Programs is processed by the registrar and granted by the department.
The University shall give priority to its permanent and contract employees serving for at least one year and having a good performance in their duties for admission to the different programs according to the interest of the office or academic unit the employee is working and relevance of the field of study to the University. The number of employees that shall be admitted to each program shall not exceed 15% of the minimum intake capacity of the academic unit

i. Admission to Summer/In-service, distance graduate Programs

Graduates holding undergraduate degree from recognized institutions of higher learning may apply for admission into a summer/in-service or distance graduate programs of the university. Applicants to such programs should:

Have a minimum CGPA of 2.00 in their undergraduate degree program and pass the entrance examination set by the specific academic unit the student is applying for.
Have no “F”,” I” or “NG” grades in their records.
Deliver official copies of their records to the registrar before their applications are sent to their respective academic units.
Produce a sponsorship letter from their sponsoring organization(s) or deposit, in cash, tuition fee for the semester they are applying for prior to registration if they are self- sponsored.
Produce a leave of absence from their employers for the study period if not self sponsored.
Meet the special requirements of the academic unit the student is applying for

ii. Admission to a Summer/In-service undergraduate program:

This is a program opened to give opportunities of attending in higher learning institutions without displacement from work. Therefore, applicants to this program should solicit a source of fund for their tuition, lodging, food and other facilities.

a) Admission into Summer/In-service undergraduate program shall be determined similar to the admission of any undergraduate program
b) An applicant to the summer/in-service degree program should
1. Have a minimum CGPA of 2.00 from prior diploma and pass the entrance examination set by academic unit (curriculum of the program) to which the student is applying for.
2. Have no “F”, “I “or “NG” grades in her/his records.
3. Deliver official copies of the required records to the registrar prior to the entrance exam.
4. Produce a sponsorship letter from their sponsoring organization(s) or deposit, in cash, tuition fee for the semester they are applying for prior to registration if they are self- sponsored.
5. Produce a leave of absence from his/her employer for the study period if not self sponsored.
6. Meet the special requirements of the academic unit s/he is applying for.
