1. Those who have successfully completed the preparatory program (in both Social & Natural Sciences) with a passing mark in Higher Education Entrance Examination, or
2. Those who will meet the requirements of Ministry of Education for higher learning.

The rationale for the development of this concurrent teacher education program is to see an alternative program whereby professional courses are offered together with subject area courses.

A. The university entrance cut off point for teacher  education which is to  be set by the MOE, OR

B. Entrance examination:

• To assess students’ readiness, predisposition, and motivation to become secondary school teachers.
• To assess students’ aptitude & communication skills
• To assess their engagement with schools (if any)

· Applicants should have a Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized university in Ethiopian Language(s) and Literature – Amharic, Folklore, Journalism and Communication, English language and literature, Theatre, Afan Oromo, Tigrigna, and Other Ethiopian Languages and Literature, Linguistics, Theology and other related fields.

·  Applicants should have a minimum CGPA of 2.00 in undergraduate studies.

·  Applicants should submit letters of recommendation, two from their undergraduate instructors and one from a referee who is familiar with the applicant’s professional work.

· Applicants should pass the entrance examination set by the Department of Ethiopian Language(s) and Literature – Amharic, Bahir Dar University.

· Applicants should present official transcripts of their academic records to be sent directly to the University from the issuing institutions.

· Applicants should present a proof of financial support

· Applicants should fulfill requirements set by the university.

1. Acquire a strong theoretical knowledge base in Amharic Language education, and applied linguistics research.

2.  Acquire ability to apply language teaching and language learning theory and research to Amharic teaching methodology.

3.   Acquire ability to read, interpret, and evaluate professional literature.

4.   Acquire the ability to conduct and evaluate original field research and present findings.

5.   Acquire a deep understanding of the role of linguistics and the impact of social and cultural factures in teaching Amharic.

6.   Provide opportunities to acquire refresh or expand their knowledge of the role of research in language teaching.

7. Become active members and advocates of the Amharic language education profession.

Develop knowledge and skills to design, implement, and evaluate teacher training programs

·  Recommendation: each applicant must provide three written confidential recommendations from person who can attest to the applicant’s academic and professional abilities and proven accomplishments in education.

·    Writing test: applicants will be required to take writing and critical analysis test in which they read and write critical analysis of journal articles.

·   Synopsis: each applicant is expected to provide written research synopsis which describes the research methodology of the problem or question that will be researched, including brief theoretical perspectives.

• Applicants who have a Master’s or MPhil Degrees from a recognized university in Amharic Literature, Folklore and Ethiopian Literature, English language and Literature, Theatre, Afan Oromo, Tigrigna, and other Ethiopian Languages, Folklores and Literatures are eligible for the program. Under special circumstances, admission will be open to applicants with MA degrees in Journalism and Communication, History, Sociology, Psychology, and Gender studies. However, such applicants will be required to take the following bridge courses – Alit 5031: History of Ethiopian literature and Theory of literature and criticism I & II with a minimum of B grade.
• Applicants should submit 3 letters of recommendation, at least one from their graduate instructors and one or more from a referee who is familiar with the applicant’s professional work.
• Applicants should pass the entrance examination set by the Department of Ethiopian Language(s) and Literature – Amharic, Amharic Literature, Bahir Dar University.
• Applicants should present official transcripts of their academic records to be sent directly to the University from the issuing institutions.
