Bahir Dar University School of Law has been established within the context of the broader objectives of the University. The Department of Law was officially established by the decision of the University Senate in August 2001, and subsequently developed into a full-fledged Faculty in February 2004, renamed in 2009 as Law School.

Currently, in the field of law, the School is giving training in Regular LLB, Continuing Education LLB and Distance LLB programs. Because of the ever increasing demand for qualified legal professionals with high level of training, the School has already started expanding its horizon of training into master of laws programs. There are three specialized LLM Programs launched by the school. Regular Students have been admitted in all the three LLM programs. Moreover, we have broadened students’ and stakeholders’ access to our LLM through summer program. In this respect, the EFDRE Ministry of Defense and the Justice Bureau of Gambella Regional State send students to our LLM in Criminal Justice and Human Rights program in the summer arrangement.

Mission

The School shall contribute towards the intellectual and social conditions of Ethiopia by providing equitably accessible quality legal education and training programmes through teaching, research and service to prepare competent and responsible members of the legal profession who actively contribute towards rule of law, democracy, human rights, good governance, social justice, equity, tolerance and development.

Vision

The School’s vision is to elevate the standard and quality of legal education to the level of leading law schools in other countries, and towards preparing graduates who will have optimum impact in Ethiopia’s development, democracy, good governance and social justice.

Admission Requirements

In order to be considered for admission to the program, candidates must hold an undergraduate degree in any of the specific fields listed below and fulfill academic requirements pursuant to Bahir Dar University Senate Legislation. Candidates who have work experiences in governmental and non-governmental organizations are encouraged to apply. Other admission requirements will be determined in accordance with the relevant University Legislation.

Academic requirements
An applicant for admission to the Master’s program must have a Bachelors’ degree in the specific/related field(s) of study from an accredited institution of higher learning.
Bachelors’ Degree in the specific/related field(s) of the study should be in:

Social Sciences which include political science, Civics and Ethical studies, international relations, governance and development studies, public administration, sociology, psychology, anthropology, philosophy, public policy, history, geography, gender studies, and other social sciences related fields.

Arts and Humanities with a specialization in language and literature, journalism and mass communication and other related fields

Business and Economics with specialization in business administration, management, commerce, economics, public finance, banking and insurance, accounting and finance and other related fields

Agriculture and Environmental Sciences: with specialization in natural resources management, rural development, environmental science, agronomics, forestry, and other related fields.

Law: specialization in law and related fields.

The applicant must satisfactorily pass an entrance examination to be administered by the program concerned. Foreign applicants may, in lieu of sitting for the entrance examination,
submit results of GRE/TOEFL/IELTS or equivalent, language proficiency examinations,
for applicants whose undergraduate medium of instruction is not English, etc.
Non-academic Requirements
The candidate must produce a minimum of two letters of recommendation from undergraduate instructors, employers or professional Associations.
Candidates may also be required to bring a letter of sponsorship.
Other requirements will be determined in accordance with the relevant University Legislation.
