Professional Profile

Textile Engineering is a technological profession that deals with the application of scientific, engineering and technological principles to the design and manufacturing activities of fibers, yarn and textile products, process and machinery/or equipment.

Clothing is a basic necessity and most human beings love wearing stylish, durable and functional clothes.  Those end products such as garments and apparels are right from the collection and processing of raw materials (cotton, wool, synthetic materials etc. ) through spinning, weaving or knitting and finishing.

Course Details

It is a Bachelor of Science (BSc.) Degree regular program taking 5 years duration. The academic program is divided into 10 semesters. Each semester lasts for a period of 4 months. The course consists of classroom lectures, tutorials and practical laboratory sessions counting total 300CP. Industrial visit and one semester internship program are also part of the curriculum.

In short, textile engineering uses principles of engineering, chemistry, textile processes and textile equipment in the process of textile production/manufacturing. The core subjects present in the academic program are Chemistry, Communication Skills, Engineering Mathematics, Polymer science, Textile Fibers, Yarn Manufacturing, Weaving, Fabric Structure, and Textile Chemical Processing including bleaching, dyeing, printing and finishing, Textile Machines, Operation Research, Quality Control and Textile Costing, BSc Thesis as well as management skills.

Eligibility Criteria

Natural science students who scored more than the minimum higher education entrance examination result are placed as well as enrolled in the program by FDRE Ministry of Education (MoE) every year.

Textile engineers apply the principles of engineering to the design and manufacture of fiber, textiles, apparel and associated processes and products. It is a multidisciplinary role requiring sound knowledge of chemical, industrial and mechanical engineering. Chemical companies that produce polymers and fibers employ textile engineers to develop and improve their manufacturing processes. Firms that use biomedical materials, composites and sports textiles use these engineers to research and develop high-performance fabrics. Some textile engineers spend their entire careers in the lab conducting research into complex materials.
