In 1996, the Department of Biology has launched its first undergraduate trainings in Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) and Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Biology in regular and summer in-service training program, respectively with the objective of producing competent graduates with the required biological knowledge, transferable skills; and good attitude and professional ethics to work in High Schools. In 2007, the department has launched a revised curriculum for B.Sc. degree program in Biology on a regular basis based on the outcome of a need assessment and feasibility study. However, in light of the recent changes made in the educational policy, since the Ministry of Education showed interest to implement the add-on instead of the integrated approach of training educationalists, the department of biology revised again this curriculum and introduced nationally harmonized curriculum for B.Sc. degree program in Biology as of September 2009.

Admission Requirements

In order to be admitted to the Undergraduate Degree Program of the Department of Biology, a candidate must:

successfully complete the Preparatory Program or equivalent with pass mark in natural science; or have equivalent qualification; as per the admission rules and regulations of the university and Ministry of Education or
have diploma in biology or other related biological disciplines from any accredited higher learning institutions.

Duration of Study

The Biology Bachelor Program is a 3-year program divided into six equal semesters.

Graduation Requirements

In order to qualify for graduation, a candidate should amass the following credit hours:

Biology Compulsory = 78
Biology Elective = 4
Supportive = 14
General Courses = 12A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 is required for graduation. No graduation is allowed with an “F” grade in any one of the courses.

Admission Requirements

Candidates must fulfill the following requirements to join any of the above MSc and MEd programs

Evidence of successful completion of B. Ed or B.Sc. degree program in biology, sport science, animal science, plant science, or in other related biological sciences from any accredited higher learning institution. If candidates are found to be deficient in some courses they may be required to take selected remedial undergraduate courses.
A minimum of two years of service in research organizations, industries or educational institutions.
A successful pass mark in a qualifying (entrance) examination set by the department.
Three authentic letters of recommendations from the employer and undergraduate instructors.
Fulfilling all other requirements of the School of Graduate Studies of Haramaya University.
Letter of sponsorship from the employer.
Self-sponsored candidates must produce evidence of advance payments during registration at the beginning of each semester. The department (University) shall not be obliged to finance their research work.

Duration of the Study

Every study program lasts two years. Most of the first year will be devoted for course work while the second year will be dedicated for seminar presentations and thesis research or project works. However, in very rare cases, one or two semesters may be added with the approval of the Department Graduate Council and school of graduate studies of Haramaya University.
