The establishment of the FoT can be traced back to 1997(1990 E.c) when the government decided to expand the then Jimma institute of Healthy science (founded in 1983) beyond healthy fields and upgrade it into a full –fledged university with the opening of faculty of technology and faculty of business and economics. Upon its establishment, the faculty consists of three departments namely civil Engineering Department, Electrical Engineering Department and Mechanical Engineering Department.

The first batch graduates from the regular program appeared in 2002.Since then the faculty has been producing competent graduates and contributing its share to the development of the country. With the intention of diversifying its study programs, the launching of two additional programs in engineering fields were made. This has led to the establishment of Water Resource and Environmental engineering department and Biomedical Engineering department. With this the number of engineering department has increased to five.

Initially study period of undergraduate engineering departments were five years. However, due to the reform introduced in to the educational system of the country, it was reduced to four years.

Vision

Jimma Institute of Technology (JiT) is a higher education institute for engineering and technology disciplines that meets international standards. The JiT will provide university-level services in education, research, and technology transfer to serve regional demands in the Oromia region and the country. JIT shall be premier engineering and technology institute in the western and south western Ethiopia and distinguished as one of the leading engineering, research and educational institute in the nation. It aspires to Improve Ethiopia’s quality of life through application-oriented research; community focused engineering and technological discoveries; and the education of future leaders in the fields.

Institute of Technology Admission Information

Admissions to undergraduate programs of the institute from preparatory schools shall be based on completion of the preparatory program and obtaining the necessary pass marks in the Ethiopian Higher Education Entrance Examination (EHEE). Admissions may also be granted to students completing their secondary education in foreign countries on the basis of equivalent academic achievements that shall be determined by the Ministry.

Institute of Technology Registration Guidelines

Every student should register at the beginning of each semester in person, in order to keep the enrolment active. The office of the registrar will conduct a registration on a pre-arranged date and time. Once the regular registration is over, there is a further two-day late/penalty registration period, unless otherwise specified by university senate or institute academic commission.

Student who fail to register with in the dates set for both normal and late registration are subjected to disqualification from the institute for at least one year.
