Background

The discipline of Public Health has a long and illustrious history at the University of Gondar, forming the very foundations our University. The University of Gondar was initially established in 1954 as a Public Health College and Training Center (PHC&TC) and quickly became established as a pioneer center for public health practice serving as a key source of Ethiopia’s health professionals.

As the University transitioned through different stages of development it maintained and nurtured its deep rooted commitment to the discipline of Public Health. When the PHC&TC developed into the Gondar College of Medicine and Health Sciences (GCMS), the public health related work was undertaken by the Department of Community Health. The Department served as a leader in public health service and research undertaking a range of activities including teaching undergraduate and later on graduate students; carrying out research activities; developing and managing the Team Training Program; and developing and coordinating the Dabat Rural Health Project (now known as Dabat Research Center).

The work of the Department of Community Health steadily grew developing into the School of Public Health in 2007 and finally the Institute of Public Health.

We aim to be the leading public health institution in public health research, education and service helping to bring about a healthier Ethiopia.

Our Work

With a proud tradition dating back six decades the Institute of Public Health continues to be a leader in the field of public health within the country. Our Institute provides quality education, research, consultancy services and leadership to improve public health and eliminate health disparities. Our teaching and research activities focus on practical applications of both basic and advanced public health sciences in order to solve community health problems in the nation. Our community services are designed to help us share our existing knowledge and expertise in order to help eliminate health problems and assist in the development of a healthier society.
