Background

When the then Gondar Public Health College and Training Center (PHC and TC) established in 1954 the Nursing Department was among the three pioneer departments that formed the College and ultimately the University. The Department of Nursing trained competent nurses at different levels who were distributed throughout the country to care for individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, sick or well and in all settings. The services that the then graduates provided includes the promotion of health, prevention of illness, and care of ill, disabled and dying people. Since our establishment our work and reach has steadily expanded – from teaching 15 students per year to now more than 1000 students, from 2 instructors to more than 30 at present.

The Department of Nursing is dedicated to contributing to the sustainable socio-economic development of the country through training and producing competent, committed, compassionate, and responsible nurses; conducting problem-based research and rendering relevant community services that are related to community health nursing and nursing in general.

Our Vision

We aim to be the best center in nursing training, research and community service in the country by the year 2020.

Our Work

Nursing encompasses autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, sick or well and in all settings. Nursing includes the promotion of health, prevention of illness, and the care of ill, disabled and dying people. Advocacy, promotion of a safe environment, research, participation in shaping health policy and in patient and health systems management, and education are also key nursing roles.

The Department of Nursing is committed to contribute for the sustainable socioeconomic development of the country through: training competent nurses that will work on improving health care practice; providing high quality promotional, preventive, curative and rehabilitative health services for the community; conducting problem based health and health related researches that will seek to address the community’s problems; and promoting national and international governmental and nongovernmental cooperation and collaboration.

We currently have 989 undergraduate and 32 postgraduate students and our work is supported by 32 members of staff. Our Department remains the leading nurse training centers in the country. This is manifested by the recognition obtained orally and in written form from individuals to organizations. For example recently among 300 nurses that competed to be employed in one national hospital 10 out the 13 finally hired were from University of Gondar.
