Brief History of the Department

The Department of Social Work is located in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities at University of Gondar. The department was established in 2010 with the opening of Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program. The Department is the second public institution next to the School of Social Work at Addis Ababa University in commencing social work education in Ethiopia. In 2013, the Department has launched Master of Social Work (MSW) program in the regular, extension and summer programs. Since September 2018 the Department has launched PhD program in Social Work in collaboration with national and international partner universities.

Our Department at a Glance

The department hosts both the BSW, MSW and PhD programs. Since its inception, the department graduates more than 550 BSW students. Currently, the department enrolled 200 students in the BSW program, 68 MSW students in the regular, extension and summer programs and 9 PhD students.

Programs

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR BSW PROGRAM (REGULAR)

To be eligible for admission to the program, a candidate must:

Pass national examination after two years of preparatory program;
Placement, within the University into the program shall be on competitive basis;
Both sex shall be considered for admission; no gender differentiation; positive affirmative action towards female applicants will be there; and
Graduates with diploma from recognized institutions in home science, health sciences, management, economics, cooperative, other social sciences graduates, natural resources, and all agricultural sciences shall be considered for admission as advance standing students.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR MSW PROGRAM (REGULAR, SUMMER AND EXTENSION)

To be eligible for admission to the program, a candidate must:

Graduate with bachelor degree from recognized institutions in Social Work, related field of studies such as sociology, psychology, social anthropology, political science, history, environmental studies, management, gender studies, law, civics and ethical education, development studies, population studies, nursing, psychiatry, public health, environmental and occupational health and other public health related fields can be admitted to the program.
Meet the minimum requirement for admission to the post-graduate program by earning a Bachelor’s Degree (B.A/B.Sc.) in a relevant field with a minimum CGPA of 2.0.
A passing score of 50 % the program entrance exam set by the department
Placement, within the University into the programs shall be on a competitive basis;
Both sexes shall be considered for admission; no gender differentiation; positive affirmative action towards female applicants will be honored;
Candidates fulfilling the program entry requirements will be selected for admission on the basis of merit.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR PHD PROGRAM

Admission into the PhD Program in Social Work requires the approval of Graduate Program Office of the University and is effected according to the rules and regulations set forth by the Senate Legislation of University of Gondar. The minimum requirements for admission to the Doctoral program in social work at the University of Gondar are as follow:

A graduate degree in social work (MSW) or MA degree in psychology, public health, sociology, anthropology, gender studies, special needs, nursing, psychiatry and law from an accredited university;
A grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and “Good” and above in MSW/MA thesis (priority will be given for applicant who have post-MSW/MA publication and research experience);
A concept paper (not more than five pages) which states their academic interest in the program and intended area of research and presentation;
The applicant must adequately pass an entrance examination to be administered by the department graduate committee;
Applicants must submit a minimum of two years’ work experiences in teaching or social service organizations;
Applicant should submit two letters of recommendations from immediate supervisor and former academic advisor;
Applicants should submit letter of sponsorship or proof of bank statement that justifies financial capacity to cover expenses needed in the program;
Applicant must leave from any job and commit to full-time study; and • This PhD program requires language proficiency test (e.g. TOEFL, IELTS, GRE) for international students whose primary language is not English.

However, meeting these requirements does not necessarily ensure acceptance into a doctoral program in social work. Applicants must receive departmental recommendation for admission after the application files are fully scrutinized. Admission is also contingent on fulfilling other requirements requested by the postgraduate office of the university and will be decided on the availability of appropriate faculty members in the department or elsewhere to serve in teaching and supervision, enough space and necessary resources in the department. The Departmental Graduate Committee (DGC) will select the applicants for the program on the basis of a sound undergraduate and postgraduate academic record, and a convincing statement of purpose which clearly describes their academic interest in the program and intended area of research.

Finally, the whole process will be approved by the DGC and the admission letter will be given to the applicants by the registrar office.
