Job Title:    ICT Assistant/ Systems Administrator

Reports to: Senior Higher Education Officer – ICT and Documentation

About US:

The National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) was established under “The Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act, 2001” for regulating and guiding the establishment and management of institutions of higher learning, regulating the quality of higher education, equating of qualifications and for advising government on higher education issues.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Assists in managing the operations, support configuration and maintenance of the Microsoft windows client/server infrastructure of the NCHE;
  • Supports all activities under the Management Information System (MIS) and NCHE website maintenance;
  • Maintains the Information Technology Asset Management System to ensure that all assets are recorded and updated/removed when required;
  • Maintains staff accounts for email, MIS and action approved user account updates;
  • Carries out daily system monitoring, verifies the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes in order to proactively prevent regular or common faults;
  • Upgrades and configures system software that supports operational needs and maintain operational, configuration, and procedures;
  • Performs daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media, recovery tapes or disks are created, and media is recycled and sent off site as necessary;
  • Performs ongoing and maintenance of all servers in the operations team environment;
  • Maintains security integrity;
  • Manages all servers including hardware/software upgrades and patching of OS and applications;
  • Creates and maintains documentation environment and application configurations;
  • Assists with planning and implementing of growing Information Technology operations;
  • The ICT Assistant/ Systems Administrator complies with and helps to enforce standard operating policies and procedures;
  • Manages the help desk and provides support to ICT needs from staff and various external clients /constituencies.  Investigate and troubleshoot issues;
  • Carries out any other duties that may be assigned from time to time by superiors.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The ideal candidate for the ICT Assistant/ Systems Administrator job should preferably hold a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Information Systems or ICT related field from a recognized institution;
  • Three (3) years of information technology administration and support experience, or computer science background with relevant work experience;
  • Systems Administration/System Engineer certification in Unix and Microsoft, Cisco Certified Entry Network Technician (CCENT), Cisco Certified Network Associate Routing and Switching (CCNA R&S), Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) are an added advantage that should be reflected in experience;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong knowledge of windows server OS, Active Directory, Exchange, SQL operations and troubleshooting;
  • Knowledge of windows 7 and office 2007, 2010, 2013;
  • Networking skills including TCP/IP and the ability to configure network printers;
  • Awareness of all mainstream mobile technologies (Android, Apple etc.);
  • Working knowledge of IT operating systems, particularly Windows, Exchange and Citrix;
  • Hands on experience of installing IT hardware and software.
