Languages Offered
The Centre of Languages and Professional Skills (CLAPS) offers various language courses in different languages. Our language instruction is taught to international curriculum and standards by internationally experienced and qualified instructors.
Languages taught include:
English Foundation Programme
The Centre of Languages and Professional skills (CLAPS) offers intensive, two month English Foundation short courses at IUEA. These courses are designed to immerse learners in an English speaking environment and improve language skills in speaking, listening, writing and reading.
Our current courses include:
- English Language Foundation (Immersion) 2 months
- English Language Foundation (Preparation to Study) 2 months
- IELTS/TOEFL preparation courses (For testing off campus) 1 month
Students are expected to attend the two month programme and progress through to higher levels of English proficiency or enter IUEA’s other programmes of study (Foundation or Bachelors programmes). Standardised testing allows us to determine exactly what level of English language proficiency you are at and what you will need to accomplish your goals.
Our internationally experienced trainers will facilitate in meeting all your English language needs and our curriculum is based on international (British Council and Common European Framework) standards of English.
Over and above English training, students studying the English foundation programme will benefit from access to IUEA services and facilities and entertaining activities.

French Programme
CLAPS offers French language short courses based on the CEFR framework. Our instructors are qualified French language instructors with years of experience teaching French.Students studying our French courses are supplied with a standardised French language text book and materials to assist them with their learning.
Student completing their French can also complete official and certified French Language proficiency Tests administrated by the French Government through Alliance Francaise.
We also actively encourage ties with French cultural and social groups to enhance our student’s experience of French language and culture.
French short courses offered include
- French A1 – 2 months
- French A2 – 2 months
- French B1 – 2 months
Chinese Programme
CLAPS has a partnership with the Confucius Institute, an Chinese language and culture agency run by the Chinese government. Our Chinese instructors are qualified Chinese nationals teaching Chinese in Uganda.
CLAPS offers Chinese language short courses to introduce and develop students’ Chinese language proficiency. These courses are based on the official Chinese language testing systems (HANBAN).
The Confucius institute also has provisions to offer Chinese language course credit as a part of our degree programmes which is expected to become functional soon.
Swahili Programmes
CLAPS runs regionally recognised Swahili language short courses as a part of our wide reaching language programmes.
Kiswahili is taught across three levels from beginner through to advanced. Students taking the Swahili courses shall benfit from learning this important regional language and mastering confidence in speaking and writing it.
German Programmes
CLAPS is soon to offer German language short courses with qualified German language instructors, based on the CEFR language standards. Fro more information, please inquire.
