Effective laboratory services are an essential component of a functional health care system. Clinicians depend on laboratory tests to assess patients’ health, accurately diagnose the cause of illness and design appropriate treatment plans. Despite the importance of properly functioning laboratories in delivery of effective health care, Africa’s laboratory sector, especially laboratories in remote and underserved regions, often have weak and partly functional systems and are therefore the weakest link in the provision of quality health care services. AMREF Laboratory Programme has developed several laboratory training courses to address some of these challenges with the overall goal of strengthening laboratory diagnostic systems for improved health care services

Medical Laboratory Practices and Management (MLP&M) Course
A competency-based training course designed to provide an opportunity for laboratory supervisors to acquire desired management and technical skills to ensure laboratories under their supervision meet the required standards of quality health care. The course is implemented in three phases and allows participants to apply theory into practice by implementing various improvement projects based on the various gaps they detect at their work stations
Laboratory staff with a minimum of Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences with at least 2 years of practical laboratory experience post-qualification. In addition, participants must also be involved in day to day supervision of their own laboratory and/or laboratories within their jurisdictions

WHO External Competency Assessment of Malaria Microscopists
This course is designed to establish core national and regional experts in malaria microscopy and promote implementation of quality malaria diagnostic services. The course assesses the competency of malaria microscopists and provides refresher training in all aspects of malaria microscopy based on standardised instruction and revision
Laboratory staff working mainly in the malaria or parasitology section of the laboratory and have oversight responsibilities for improving malaria diagnostic services in their countries or regions

Refresher Course in Essential Laboratory Services (RCELS)
The course is designed to strengthen laboratory diagnostic services through practical refresher training on essential laboratory procedures and management practices. The course seeks to refresh skills needed to perform essential laboratory tests to a high standard, incorporating appropriate quality management practices, and introduces participants to the role of the laboratory in supporting integrated disease surveillance and response (IDSR)
Holders of certificate or diploma in medical laboratory technology, with at least 2 years practical experience. Bench-trained laboratory workers MUST have at least 5 years practical experience. All participants must be competent in written and spoken English
