Malawi University MUST Admission Requirements 2024-2025

MUST Entry Requirements 2024-2025; Unless otherwise specified in the programme document, admission of ‘O and A level applicants shall be based on the following:

Admission Requirements for Economic first year students Applicants must meet the following requirements:

a)For all science related programmes, applicants should possess a Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or IGSCE or their equivalent ‘O’ level qualification with six credits including English obtained in 2016, 2017 or 2018. Applicants must also score credit grades in Mathematics, Physical Science (or Physics and Chemistry) and Biology. Those applying for programmes in Earth and Climate Science, Energy and Water Resources should also have a credit in Geography in addition to the above subjects. Those applying for the Bachelor of Arts in Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Practices and African Musicology must have minimum of credit in History, Life Skills, Social Studies, Creative Arts, and Languages.

OR

b)A-Level with a three subject combination of any of the following subjects: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or Biology or Geography for the science related programmes and Geography, History, Life Skills, Languages, Arts, or Social Studies for the arts programmes, with a minimum grade of ‘C’ in each of any of the three subjects. All candidates with A Level will join in Year 2 of study.

c)MSCE or IGSCE applicants must have scored an aggregate of not more than 21 points.

2.Admission Requirements for Mature Entry Students Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

a)A Malawi School Certificate of Education or its equivalent ‘O’ level qualification with at least four (4) credits including Mathematics, Physical Science (or Physics and Chemistry) and Biology with credit score of not more than 5 points in each of the above subjects. In addition, for BSc in Earth and Climate Science, Energy and Water Resources, applicants should also have a credit in Geography. Those applying for the Bachelor of Arts in Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Practices and African Musicology must have minimum of credit in History, Life Skills, Social Studies, Creative Arts, and Languages.

b)A relevant Diploma or Advanced Diploma from accredited institution of higher learning.

OR

c)A-Level with a three subject combination of any of the following subjects:

Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or Biology with a minimum grade of ‘C’ in each of these three subjects.

d)For the Bachelor of Arts in Language, Communication and Culture, candidates must have a relevant Diploma or Advanced Diploma from accredited institution of higher learning and a Malawi School Certificate of Education or its equivalent ‘O’ level qualification with at least four (4) credits in History, Life Skills, Social Studies, Creative Arts, and Languages (including Chichewa). Candidates will join in 3rd year of study.

Candidates may be required to take additional first year modules wherever necessary.

Tuition fees payable are as follows:

a)K2,250,000.00 per academic year for Malawian students;

b)US$3,900 per academic year for foreign students from SADC countries;

c)All other foreign students will pay US$4,700 per academic year.

Other Costs for Undergraduates

Residence Fees: K200,000 or (US$215) per year

Medical Insurance: K250,000 or US$350 per year

Living expenses approximately K500,000 or (US$700) per year

To be considered, applicants must submit the following mandatory requirements:

1.A completed undergraduate application which can either be collected in person from MUST Registry Office or on written request or can be downloaded from the following website: www.must.ac.mw

2.A letter of undertaking to pay economic fees from parent/guardian or sponsor with evidence of reliable source of income. Students will only be allowed to register upon part-payment of at least half the full fees.

3.Authenticated copies of academic certificates or notification of results.

4.An original bank deposit slip of a non-refundable application fee of K10,000 for Malawians and $50 for all non-Malawians. Payment of application fees should be made into the bank account provided below:

  • Holders of MSCE, IGSCE or other internationally recognised qualification comparable to ‘O’ level certificates with at least six credits including Mathematics, Physical Science/Physics, chemistry, and at least a pass of 7 points or its equivalent in English language obtained in the current year or the previous year. For purposes of selection, ‘O’ level grades are interpreted as follows: A*=1, A=2, B=3, C=5, D=7, EFG=8. Please note the difference in the interpretation for the ‘A’ level grades.
  • Candidates with ‘A’ level qualifications must have a minimum of three principal passes which should include Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry with aggregate of at least 9 points obtained in the current year or the preceding two years. For purposes of selection, ‘A’ level grades are interpreted as follows: A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1. Please note the difference in the interpretation for the ‘O’ level grades.
  • Candidates with an International Baccalaureate (IB) must have a minimum of 30 points obtained in the current year or the preceding two years with bias in science subjects.
  • Candidates with an Advanced Subsidiary (AS) certificate must have achieved at least grade ‘C’ in four AS-Level recognised subjects plus IGSCE credits in Mathematics, Physics/Chemistry, and at least a pass in English language (as in 2.1), obtained in the current year or the preceding years.
  • Candidates with a National Senior Certificate (NSC) must have a minimum score of 60% (Achievement Level 5) in four designated NSC subjects including Mathematics and Physics/Chemistry, and at least a pass in English language (as in 2.1) obtained in the current year or the preceding year.
