University of Malawi Chancellor College Department of Curriculum and Teaching Studies
UNIMA Chancellor College Department of Curriculum and Teaching Studies; The Department of Curriculum and Teaching Studies (CATS) was set up in 1988 to be responsible for subject specific teaching methodologies in the Faculty of Education.
STAFF
The academic staff of CATS work in three sections according to their specialisation: Language Education, Mathematics and Science Education, and Social Studies Education. The CATS academic staff have expertise in curriculum design and implementation; teaching and learning theories, subject specific teaching methodologies of the various subjects taught at secondary school level in Malawi.
BUSINESS
The core business of CATS department is to prepare and develop professional human resources required to support, sustain, review and revitalize the primary and secondary education sectors in Malawi.
This mission is achieved through teaching, conducting basic and applied research and provision of consultancy services, in relation to the needs of Malawi and possibly Africa, in order to inform theory and practice in education.
The department is also involved from time to time in the provision of continued professional development to all serving teachers, educational administrators and managers; and to provide profession advisory and consultancy services to individuals, educational institutions, government departments, ministries, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and related stakeholders involved with education.
PROGRAMMES
The department offers a Master of Education (Languages), Master of Education (Sciences), Master of Education (Social Studies), PhD in Language Education, a PhD in Social Studies Education and a PhD in Science Education.
The department also offers the University Certificate in Education in Language, Science and Social Studies.
