University of Malawi Chancellor College Department of Foundational Law

UNIMA Chancellor College Foundational Law Department; The Department of Foundational Law is the home of the basic and foundational courses in law that the Faculty of Law offers. The Department was established in 2007 when the Department of Law, then the only department in the Faculty of Law, was split into two departments: the Department of Foundational Law and the Department of Practical Legal Studies. Following that split, the Department of Foundational Law became the base of all core courses that are required for legal practice in Malawi.

COURSES OFFERED

For the Bachelor of Laws (Honours) degree, the Department offers the following core courses:

  • Introduction to Law
  • Constitutional and Administrative Law
  • Criminal Law
  • Law of Torts
  • Law of Contract
  • Property Law
  • Law of Trusts
  • Law of Human Rights
  • Commercial Law
  • Law of Business Organizations
  • Law on Wills and Succession
  • Customary Law
  • Jurisprudence.

ELECTIVE COURSES

Apart from these courses, the Department also offers these other elective courses:

  • Family Law
  • Public International Law
  • Gender and Law
  • Environmental Law
  • Conflict of Laws
  • Law of Taxation.

The Department of Foundational Law has, in addition to the above, teaching responsibilities towards students reading for an undergraduate Diploma in Law.

BEYOND TEACHING

Apart from courses offered by the department, members of the department seek to keep pace with current events and developments in law and policy affecting Malawi. Members of the department work with the government, NGOs and other stakeholders to provide consultancy services to ensure that the current developments in the law have a substantive impact in practice.
