University of Malawi Chancellor College Department of Practical Legal Studies
UNIMA Chancellor College Department of Practical Legal Studies; The Department of Practical Legal Studies was established specifically to equip students with practical legal skills. The idea is that students should have both competencies; theoretical and practical skills.
PRACTICAL APPROACH
Further, the department provides an opportunity for students to interact with real clients under supervision of lecturers. In this way, students learn on the job and are prepared to use the law to serve the public.
COURSES OFFERED
- Civil Procedure
- Legal Drafting
- Law of Evidence
- Accounting and Taxation
- Extended Essay Writing
- Clinical Legal Education.
These are practical courses and aims at imparting/inculcating and enhancing competences, skills and attitudes that are necessary for one to become a lawyer of great difference.
LEGAL CLINIC
The department does also run a legal clinic where students are trained. Firstly on how to provide legal service to the public and then provide free legal service to vulnerable groups in society.
Students do also conduct outreach services sensitizing communities on human rights issues. Currently students and members of staff do meet clients at Chikanda Clinic every Friday from 2 p.m to 4 p.m.
The clinic is continuously growing and so far we have Child Rights Clinic, Bail and Mitigation Clinic, Disability Rights Clinic, Human Rights and HIV and AIDS Clinic. The Department exists to equip students with these practical skills so that they are ready to serve the public.
