UDSM Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies
Philosophy is said to be ‘the mother of all sciences’ as philosophical analysis and argumentation gives foundations for any other academic study and scientific knowledge. In most universities in the world and in the region, philosophical studies are considered of central importance, and strong programmes in philosophy have been developed to maintain this tradition of analytical reasoning. While across the world, philosophy is a very active field of study and research, the UDSM has been one of few main national universities in the region that do not have a full philosophy programme. In light of this background, this proposal seeks to fulfil this gap and put the UDSM back on the map of the universities which invest in intellectual development and encourages the birth of new ideas and critical analysis.

Since the programme has a focus on ethics and social philosophy, students will have particular opportunities in civil society, public service institutions and international organizations.
Number of Staffs
At that time the Philosophy Unit had 2 Lecturers with a PhD, 4 Assistant Lecturers, 1 Tutorial Assistant, and 7 Part-Time Tutors.
The philosophy programme is now run by an independent Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, under theCollege of Humanities. The situation is paradoxical for philosophy at the UDSM, as it now has its own department but currently there is no degree programme to be taught in this new department. This submitted BA programme is therefore necessary for the Department to gain its full status and to fulfil its academic task at the UDSM
