The Department of Linguistics

is one of the departments and centers of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Khartoum. The department of Linguistics was established in 1970 due to a recommendation from Professor Abdalla Altieb who was the dean of the Faculty of Arts, to the University Vice chancellor at that time. The first head of the department was Professor Tamam Hasaan.
At the same date of establishment the program of Masters in Linguistics by courses began and went on for two years.
Some of the academic additions in the Linguistics department are:

Masters in Linguistics by research, as well as PhD in Linguistics in 1993.
Modifications of the syllabus taught at the linguistics department and development of its programs in the period of using the hours system.
Modifications of the syllabus taught at the linguistics department and development of its programs in the period of using the semester’s system.
The Department has 2 associate professors, 5 assistant professors, 1 fellow and 2 teaching assistants.
