The faculty was established in 1971 as the first dental school in the country. It continued as a department in the faculty of medicine. In1990 it was promoted as an independent faculty.
The faculty offers the bachelor degree in dental surgery with this curriculum which was adopted since 1990 to date. The faculty also offers clinical masters, clinical doctorates, MSc and PhD by research .
The faculty has earned a reputation for its educational, clinical, research, serves and patient care programs.
Rationale
With the wide spread of dental , oral diseases . development of dental serviceand the emerge of dental specialties the need for dental school become rational to cover the need for dentist in the country.
The highest educational institute Sudan university of Khartoum took the responsibility to establish the dental school of high standard educational programs that produce a knowledgeable competent dentist to meet the following challenges :
- Changes in delivery of dental service on scientific bases rather than was based on technical experiences.
- Change the modalities of dental treatment.
- Widen the scope of dental management as an integrated part of all human health
- Develop dental service with modern equipment and high technology
- Exciting developments in the methods of teaching and learning of dentistry
- Develop the profession by affiliating the dental profession to major professional regulatory bodies & medical education organizations

UNDERGRADUATES
Philosophy of Education:
Faculty of Dentistry, U of K, based its philosophy on graduating a safe & competent to practice dentist having a sound knowledge of the normal & abnormal human structures & functions with major emphasis on the craniofacial structures through teaching of basic medical & dental sciences; preclinical & clinical skills on restorative dentistry ( including endodontics); Prosthodontics; Orthodontics & Pedodontics; Crown & Bridge & Oral & maxillofacial Surgery. Additionally, the graduate have a broad knowledge of the Sudanese community with the ethical ground that guard his\her practice.
Approach of Teaching:
The teaching approach is a traditional community based one, however, recently a problem – based with an integration part mainly in the clinical subjects.
Curriculum Duration:
Five Years study periods (150 Wks). The academic year is divided into 2 terms (30 wks).
