What is Botany?
“Botany is the scientific study of the physiology, structure, genetics, ecology, distribution, classification, and economic importance of plants.”
What we do
The Department of Botany and Plant Biotechnology teaches Biology, Biology extended, and Plant Diversity at 1st-year level; Bacteriology and Virology, Microbial Diversity and Plant Pathology, Plant Anatomy and Cytology, and Plant Physiology at 2nd-year level; as well as Biotechnology and Plant Taxonomy at 3rd-year level. We also teach Life Sciences for FET students. Honours students are taught Scientific Methods, Post-harvest Physiology, Plant Biotechnology, Plant Systematics and Molecular Evolution, Advanced Plant Taxonomy and Economic Botany, Plant Biotechnology and conduct a research project (where they select their own supervisor). The department is widely known for its research in the fields of African Medicinal Plants, Crop Growth and Development as well as Plant Anatomy and Taxonomy.UJ Botany and Plant Biotechnology Department
