Is gastroscopy done in hospital?
A gastroscopy is an endoscopic procedure done on an outpatient basis in theatre under conscious sedation. The procedure is slightly uncomfortable but not painful. You may be required to stay in hospital post-procedure, based on the findings or any complications.
How long does a gastroscopy take?
A gastroscopy often takes less than 15 minutes, although it may take longer if it’s being used to treat a condition. The procedure will usually be carried out by an endoscopist (a healthcare professional who specializes in performing endoscopies) and assisted by a nurse.
What are the risks of gastroscopy?
During a gastroscopy, there’s a very small risk of the endoscope tearing the lining of your oesophagus, stomach or the first section of your small intestine (duodenum). This is known as perforation.

What kind of sedation is used for gastroscopy?
A medication called propofol is typically used. At very high doses, it can achieve “general anesthesia” as used in surgeries. Deep sedation requires closer patient monitoring during endoscopy. In many places, its use requires anesthesia personnel and may involve additional patient costs through insurance.
