Number Of Adults Who Wrote Adult Matric 2019 – 2021
It is not too late to achieve your Matric at Matric College. The oldest person in South Africa to achieve their Matric certificate is 77-year-old. Lavis Vilakazi is from Soweto. He dropped out of High School due to circumstances he faced during the apartheid era. He kept his dream alive and when people his age chose to enjoy their old age, he chose to work hard to achieve his goal of having a Matric. You, too, can complete your Matric no matter how many years you have been out of school.
What Is Adult Matric?
Adult Matric is a course for Adults, 21 and older, to obtain their Matric Certificate. It is also called a Senior Certificate (Amended). Having a Matric Certificate allows you to apply for entry-level jobs and to Tertiary Education Institutions, provided that you achieve the required marks.
Why Get A Matric Certificate As An Adult?
As mentioned above, a Matric Certificate allows you to:
- Apply for entry-level jobs
- Access to study opportunities
- Access to learnerships
Entry-level Jobs
The application requirements for entry-level jobs almost always require you to have Matric. Entry-level jobs are employment opportunities that do not require any qualifications. However, having your Senior Certificate (Amended) is beneficial and a step in the right direction towards further study and more employment opportunities.
Study Opportunities
Having a Senior Certificate (Amended) gives you the opportunity to study a Bachelors Degree, National Diploma or National Qualifications based on how well you pass your Matric.
Universities and tertiary education institutions offer courses that have different entrance requirements and one of those requirements is a Matric Certificate. If you are not ready to study further with your Matric Certificate you can choose to do learnerships.
Learnerships
Learnerships are skilled focus courses that specialise in teaching you in a specific field. They are work-based learning programmes that are managed by Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETA) that lead to a National Qualification Framework (NQF) registered qualification. Learnerships look great on a CV and you will be learning on the job. This will allow you to climb the corporate ladder.
What Is A Senior Certificate (Amended)?
The Department of Basic Education (DBE) and Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) created a programme for adults over the age of 21 to complete their Matric. Students can complete their matric regardless of their age, by completing an Adult Matric course at a college like Matric College. The Matric Certificate that is awarded to students who successfully complete an Adult Matric is also known as a Senior Certificate (Amended).
Once you have achieved your Senior Certificate (Amended) you can apply to study further, provided you meet the entrance requirements of your chosen university as well as the entrance requirements of your chosen field of study.
What Does Amended Mean?
The reason why you receive a Senior Certificate (Amended) after completing the Adult Matric Course is because of an amended syllabus and amended requirements.
This amendment was made by the Minister of Education that was gazetted by the National Government.
Syllabus
The Minister of Basic Education amended the syllabus for adults achieving their Matric Certificate to include:
- The implementation of the new education system
- The removal of the Higher Grade/ Standard Grade system

Course Duration / Kursus Duur
We recommend that you take 12 to 36 months (1 to 3 years) to complete the Adult Matric course. There are many factors to consider when thinking about the duration of your studies.
Factors To Consider When You Complete An Adult Matric Course
- How fast can you learn?
- What is the time frame you have given yourself to achieve your Matric?
- What responsibilities do you have?
- Are you working?
The Adult Matric course consists of 3 levels of education. These levels are Grade 10, 11 and 12 (Matric). Schools divide these grades into three years, and so can you when you study your Adult Matric with Matric College. If you are a fast learner then you do not have to follow the practice of schools by dividing the coursework. You can study your coursework uninterrupted and complete them at your own pace.
If you are working and have other responsibilities then that will affect the duration of your course. This would mean that you have to manage your time to include studying in your busy schedule. You can divide the coursework into portions to study when you are able to. Giving yourself a realistic time frame to achieve your Senior Certificate (Amended) is motivation to dedicate yourself to your studies and complete it.
How Long Does It Take?
In the South African education system, matric is technically a three-year programme starting in grade 10. This means that grade 10, 11, and 12 work is included in your final matric exams.
This is the same for an Adult Matric course. You could potentially study it and write your exams in less than 3 years but you will still be studying the work of 6 subjects from grades 10, 11, and 12.
Some students can complete their Adult Matric course in a single year whilst most students tend to take 2 years to finish their course.
Doing your Adult Matric in two years means that you can do 3 of your subjects in the first year and the remainder of your subjects in the second. This way you will be able to spread out your workload so that it is more doable.
How Much Does It Cost?
For all information about Adult Matric fees and payment, contact our course experts.

What Is The Difference Between The Adult Matric Certificate, And A School Matric Certificate?

The Certificates Are The Same
Whether you finish your high school matric or your Adult Matric, the certificates look the same. That means that you will not be able to tell if you completed your matric in high school or as an Adult Matric learner.
Both certificates are also accredited by Umalusi.
The Mark Calculation And Study Process is Different
Traditional high school matric marks are made up of your year’s work and your exams. This includes tests, assignments, speeches, and exams. All these marks contribute towards your high school matric mark.
When you do your Adult Matric certificate, the only mark that is used is your exam mark. That means that none of the classwork that you do contributes to your final mark.
The mark that you will see on your matric certificate after completing your Adult Matric will be your exam mark only.
How To Choose Your Subjects For The Adult Matric
When it comes to choosing your matric subjects, you have to think about your potential career. If you are thinking of going to university, you will have to choose subjects that are required when applying to the course of your choice.
Research the field of study that you want to go into and see what subjects are required to apply. If you are looking to improve your CV or just eager to study for a post-matric certificate or diploma, then you can choose subjects that you know you will pass.
Choosing your subjects is a big deal, that is why it is always a great idea to speak to one of our course experts who can help guide you through your decision-making process. There is also a lot of information about subject choices and rules that you should consider before deciding on your Adult Matric subjects.

How Are Matric Final Marks Calculated?
Senior Certificate (Amended) / Adult Matric is scored against the same metric and admission point scores (APS) as the National Senior Certificate.
The points are broken down into percentage groups that equal an admission point score that determines whether you will be granted access to a tertiary institution. Every subject is awarded a point based on the percentage result of your exam. Universities and colleges use this system to determine entry requirements to their courses. Use this APS calculator to track how well you do:
In Short:
- You get a point for each Matric subject you write
- Points are determined by how well you pass the subject
- Points for each subject are added up to determine the total APS score
- Various universities and organisations use the APS system to access your marks
- You need an APS score, determined by universities, to be accepted into a higher education institution
