Ouzo’s history is surprisingly short: in 1856, Nicholas Katsaros and his family opened the first ouzo distillery, which still produces ouzo today.

Ouzo is an anise-flavored liqueur meaning that it tastes a lot like black licorice. In that way, it’s somewhat similar to Sambuca.
How long does it take to make ouzo?
The distillation process lasts quite a while (an approximate 12 hours using a 1,000-liter still) with condensation of the steam resulting in an aromatic alcoholic distillate of approximately 80 ABV.
Can you keep ouzo in the freezer?
Ouzo is clear, but should turn milky white when water is added. Some devotees store it in the freezer, so they can drink it neat. But it should be slipped, not chugged, and it is traditionally accompanied by hors d` oeuvres, “mezes”, in Greek.
