Sol Plaatje University Faculty of Economics

The School of Economic and Management Sciences (SoEMS), the home to the BCom, Diploma in Retail Business Management, Post Graduate Diploma in Public Management, Advanced Diploma in Management and Post Graduate Diploma in Entrepreneurship, is a dynamic and inspiring school that continually aims to meet the demands of the fast-changing economic and management environment.

We achieve this by conducting ground-breaking academic research and delivering innovative teaching in disciplines such as Economics, Finance, Accounting, Marketing, Business Management, Entrepreneurship, Retailing and Public Management. Our graduates are able to gain access to tailored opportunities in industry, academia, research, and community service niches. The students gain experience and exposure to local and international businesses through several agreements the School has with relevant stakeholders.

Diploma in Retail Business Management

Period of study: 3 Years

This diploma provides students with the knowledge, insight and skills needed to follow a successful management career in the retail or wholesale fields. Retail and wholesale businesses strive to satisfy the needs of consumers by providing the necessary products and services.  The retail industry offers national and international career opportunities for the graduate. The variety of retail and wholesale businesses is enormous and includes departmental stores, hypermarkets, shopping centres, speciality stores, general dealers, chain stores, supermarkets, factory stores, boutiques and restaurants.  More …

Advanced Diploma in Management

Period of study: 2 Years

The Advanced Diploma in Management exits at NQF Level 7 and the minimum duration is one year. Students need to obtain a total of 120 SAQA credits in order to obtain the qualification.  Graduates with this qualification can work in a variety of sectors including the public sector, private sector as well NPOs and NGOs. Graduates can take up positions relating to strategic management, project management, human resources management, managerial finance as well as business research within lower management, middle management and top management.  More …

Bachelor of Commerce (Generic)

Period of study: 3 Years

The Bachelor of Commerce exits at HEQSF level 7 and the minimum duration is three years. A student needs to obtain a total of 416 SAQA credits in order to obtain the degree.  There is a strong focus on core functional areas of Business Management with majors offered in Business Management and other disciplines. The BCom intends to develop skilled graduates who are able to engage critically with the world and apply disciplinary content to the resolution of problems.  Business Management and Communication are compulsory first year modules. More …
