WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

The vision of the Faculty is to be the leading Faculty in a rural based comprehensive University providing quality programs through teaching, research and community engagement.  The Faculty boasts of the finest ladies and gentlemen of the academic profession in various fields of Science, who are working together to develop skilled graduates for the private and public work places at home and abroad.

Our Faculty consists of fourteen (14) Departments, one of which offers the Foundation programme while others offer the BSc degree in thirty-seven (37) double majors.The double majors are complemented by a number of focused degrees in Agriculture, Consumer and Nursing Sciences.The Department of Agriculture offers three focused Agricultural degrees (Agribusiness, Agronomy and Animal Science).The Faculty also offer post graduate studies leading to the award of MSc and PhDs in Science, Agriculture and Nursing.

The Faculty of Science and Agriculture is known for its attractiveness to students from different countries although the majority are from South Africa.

Besides being engaged in-class and in practical activities, the students get opportunities to visit various relevant companies in the industry to apply knowledge and gain additional skills and exposure to solving real life problems. The Faculty also organizes several workshops to assist students in acquiring Unizulu graduate attributes.

The Faculty is proud to be home to one of the thriving research chairs in South Africa in addition to various other pockets of excellence in the Faculty. The Chair in Nanotechnology is hosted in our Department of Chemistry as UNIZULU’s contribution to South African Research Chair initiative. The Centre of Excellence in Mobile e-services, hosted in Computer science is sponsored by two industry giants namely Telkom SA and Huawei Africa among Sixteen others in the Country. We are also proud of our relationships with iThemba Labs in Cape Town, Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna, the Agricultural and Medical Research Councils, the National Research Foundation as well as the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research in Pretoria for significant support with research equipment, student sponsorships and collaborators as strategic backbones behind our postgraduate study programmes.

The partnership and assistance enlisted above are the reason why the research conducted in the Faculty is so relevant to the communities that surround the University and beyond. We work in collaboration with institutions nationally and internationally with several exchange programs in place. Our emerging mission is to develop programmes that will provide entrepreneurial skills to our graduates.

UNDERGRADUATE QUALIFICATIONS (all semesterised).

(A)  A three-year double major programme leading to the award of a B.Sc. degree.Thispermit students to study          certain combinations of disciplines in accordance with their interests and requirements. Curricula are                    designed so that graduates are  equippe with the necessary skills to pursue careers in various fields.

(B)  A three-year focussed programme leading to the following degrees:
B. Consumer Science (Hospitality and Tourism).
B.A. Environmental Planning and Development,

(C) A four-year focussed programme leading to the following degrees:
B.Sc. Agriculture (Plant Science),
B.Sc. Agriculture (Animal Science),
B.Sc. Agriculture (AGRIBUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT),
B. Consumer Science (Extension and Rural Development), and
B. Cur. (Bachelor of Nursing Science)

(D) A three-year diploma programme leading to the following diplomas:
Diploma in Sport and Exercise Technology
Diploma in Hospitality Management

All the above qualifications are accredited by the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and registered with the
South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). Students are advised that even though a module or programme may be included in this Handbook the Faculty of Science and Agriculture is not compelled to offer it. POSTGRADUATE QUALIFICATIONS
Students are advised that even though a module or programme may be included in this Handbook the Faculty is not compelled to offer it.

Honours Qualifications:

The Honours Degree B.Sc (Hons) or B.Consumer Sci (Hons) follows an acceptable first degree. It is a specialised programme of one-year duration for full time students.

Masters  Qualifications:

The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Science follows a M.Sc Degree. It is of at least two years duration and based on a programme of original research.Examination is by thesis. The duration of this qualification is a minimum of two years.

Masters  Qualifications:

Following the B.Sc Hons Degree one may pursue a Master of Science Degree (M.Sc).This can be done by following either a research programme of at least one-year duration or, in some instances, by course work and research. In the former,examination is by dissertation while in the latter it is by coursework and dissertation,with coursework contributing a maximum of 50% of the total required credits. The duration of this qualification is a minimum of one year.
