Isotretinoin, also known as 13-cis-retinoic acid and sold under the brand name Accutane among others, is a medication primarily used to treat severe acne. It is also used to prevent certain skin cancers, and in the treatment of other cancers.

In its tumultuous 25-year history, the drug (also known known as isotretinoin) has been found to cause serious birth defects and possibly to increase the risk of depression and suicidal behaviour.
Yet Roaccutane is still available on the South African market, and in a number of other countries such as Switzerland, Roche said yesterday.

Isotretinoin has revolutionized the treatment of acne since it became available in South Africa in 1984, according to the National Dermatology Working Group led by Dr Dave Presbury.
It is the only treatment that affects all four aetiological factors implicated in the acne process namely: the production of sebum.
Is Accutane still on the market?
Although Accutane is no longer available under that brand name, the active ingredient isotretinoin is still available under generic names and other brands.
