Terms of Reference: Consultant Physiotherapist
Background: SOS Children‘s Villages Kenya runs programs that include Family Care, Family Strengthening, Education, Health, Youth Empowerment and Advocacy.
Started in 1973 in Buruburu (Nairobi), SOS Children’s Villages Kenya has expanded to 7 other counties in Kenya: Mombasa (1979), Eldoret (1990), Meru (2005) and Kisumu (2012) Busia and Homabay counties.
SOS CV Kenya takes care of over 15,000 children and youth under its programs
SOS Medical centers is one of the programs run by SOS Children’s Villages Kenya under health program.
SOS Children’s Villages Kenya provides individualized health care and supports communities in the development of improved health service infrastructure.
Currently, SOS Children’s Villages Kenya runs two medical centers in Nairobi-Buru Buru and Eldoret.
The medical centers serve vast clientele reaching an average of 80,000 clients per year.

Purpose: SOS Children’s Villages Kenya (SOS CV KE) Medical Centre Nairobi wishes to engage a suitable Consultant Physiotherapist on a Memorandum of Understanding terms.
The Consultant comes on board under partnership with the SOS MC Facility premises as per the designated time.
This is dependent on the number of clients that will be referred to him from within and outside the SOS MC facility.
Provide quality physiotherapy treatment to the highest possible levels
To initiate appropriate physiotherapy intervention programs for patients or clients suffering from immobility
To assess and evaluate physical disabilities caused by neurological disorders stroke, diseases or injuries
Bring wellness and mobility in physical disabilities caused by injuries, stroke or other neurological disorders through physiotherapy treatment
Handle pain and physical problems caused by illness, disabilities and injuries
Manage patients with disabilities in home and community care
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to provide patient care and comfort
To manage patients who are under the care for example people who have diabetes or coeliac disease.
Scope and Specific Tasks:
- To review (and make appropriate recommendations) on all clients referred to his /her department;
- Covers all Clients (Plus care givers) referred to the Physiotherapy department
- To ensure a high standard of clinical care to outpatient patients under your management.
- To undertake comprehensive assessments of all patients referred to the physio department and to formulate effective, clinically reasoned treatment plans.
- To carry out timely assessment and treatment of a mixed caseload
- To assess patients’ needs for any rehabilitative equipment and aids to improve safety and functioning within the home.
- To train patients, carers, family members and other agencies on the use of any equipment issued.
Deliverables
The deliverables of SOS CV KE
SOS CV KE shall provide the following;
- Office Space
- EMR system
- Electricity and Water
- Buy some of the recommended pharmaceutical commodities prescribed by the consultant
- Conduct some of the laboratory requests from the Consultant
- Organize for referral of urgent evacuation of client
- Refer and book clients that need physiotherapy services from the Medical Centre
- Make timely payments as per the signed MOU and as per the invoices
- Provide all policies to be signed off by the consultant
- Provide contract forms
The deliverables of the consultant
Procedures; the consultant shall be adherent to the following procedures
- Patients assessment both subjective and objective
- Confirming the patient’s understanding of the program based on the treatment plan
- Obtaining informed consent from the patient before commencing the treatment
- Positioning the patient and equipment.
- Commence the treatment
- Clean and store equipments according to manufacturer’s recommendations.
- Report and document information by providing patient progress feedback.
Physiotherapy Equipment; The Consultant is expected to bring on board the following equipment (Minimum requirement)
- Airex exercise mats
- IG/SF/F/TENS Stimulator
- Ultrasound therapy unit 1 and 3 MHz
- Hydro collator with assorted moist heat packs
- IRR
- Saunders lumbar traction
- Weight Cuff Set
- Switch ball
- Vibrator massager
- Pocket tens
Administrative; the following shall be expected from the Consultant
- Avail Manpower at given days in a week
- Physiotherapy equipment and Non pharms
- Compliance to TOR
- Meet the required qualifications
- Have Valid practicing license
- Have an indemnity cover
- Adhere to the organizational policies and Core Values
- Observe the latest IPC Guidelines
- Shared consultative and procedural charges for physiotherapy
- Sign the contract/MOU
Duration: The consultant is expected to propose a workable schedule for appointment dates for his/her office for delivering the above-mentioned assignment in consultation with SOS CV Kenya.
The contract is renewed annually
Budget:
The budget will be dependent on the Memorandum of understanding and the percentage cost sharing to be agreed upon by both parties.
Qualifications and Experience:
We are seeking a registered professional physiotherapist with the following; (attach relevant proof)
- Bachelor’s Degree in Physiotherapy from a recognized Educational Institution
- Additional master’s degree as an advantage
- At least 2 years’ experience in physiotherapy consultancy service
- Registration with physiotherapy Council of Kenya
- Registration with Kenya society of physiotherapy
The consultant will also exhibit discipline and integrity as a responsible individual embracing the SOS CV KE, Core Values.
Expression of Interest (EOI):
In addition to satisfying the requirements indicated under qualifications and experience above, interested individual should submit a proposal based on the Terms of Reference outlined above complete with:
- The methodology and proposed approach: this should describe your detailed understanding of the scope and objectives of the partnership and approach towards achieving the deliverables including proposed days for consultation at SOS Medical Centre
- Relevant Certification docs: Please attach your Academic certificates, tax compliance certificate, Professional Indemnity cover, and professional certification from the physiotherapy
- A CV and with at least three referees with contact details (phone and email)
- List of equipment consultants owns/leases and ready for use in the partnership (attach relevant ownership/lease proof). At minimum, the consultant should confirm ownership/lease of the above stated equipment.
