Role Summary
- The Programme Officer contributes to the Women’s Political Leadership pillar of AMwA’s work through working with partners to develop systems and strategies that challenge the social, cultural, economic, and political norms that inhibit women’s full participation in politics and governance.
- The work will include efforts to embed intersectional feminist approaches to all aspects of women’s political leadership and participation.
- AMwA’s work will include stakeholder-wide programming that involves all possible allies including men, who have an impact on women’s opportunities to exercise influence, as well as creating women-only spaces for emerging women leaders to further develop their skills in a supportive environment.
- The Program Officer will model African feminist principles, nurture teamwork, embrace diversity, inclusion, and creativity in a multi-cultural environment. .
Key Roles and Responsibilities
Strategy, program planning, and implementation
• Provide support to annual program planning processes and implementation of the activities under women’s political leadership
• Assist in carrying out field supervision of programs with guidance from the women’s political leadership lead.
• Provide support in the development of program concepts and plans.
• Conduct regular program support and monitoring visits to partners
• Support in developing funding proposals and other fundraising activities
Feminist leadership development and capacity building
• Support in building the capacity of women leaders to enhance their knowledge to inform their engagement and action
• Coordinate with relevant partners the annual African Women Leadership Institute (AWLI), advocacy events and follow up on action points
• Provide support in capacity assessments and capacity building of partners
Documentation and feminist analysis
• Provide support in feminist research to inform AMwA’s leadership programs and advocacy agenda.
• In collaboration with other teams, coordinate the dissemination of the results of research projects to internal and external constituents, and popularizes knowledge products.
• Provide support in assessing trends and systematic change relevant to politics and decision making
• Develop analytical papers/blogs on politics women’s participation in politics and decision making
• Nurture networks and alliances with academia, and research institutions
Movement building and advocacy
• Engage and nurture alumni of AMwA’s leadership institute
• Maintain and
grow AMwA’s external credibility and high-level external relations with various stakeholders within CSO, AU institutions, UN, media, and among AMwA’s development partners;
• Work closely with the other thematic teams to amplify and sustain voices of African women and girls in all their diversities and their demand for political justice
• Represent AMwA and participate in network and alliance meetings, events, and fora at national and international levels
• Ensure effective information flow and communication with other stakeholders including partners and international teams
• Provide support in building strategic partnerships with key external stakeholders that will lead to the creation of strong movements for collective advocacy.
• Implement and monitor AMwA’s partnership policy, strategy, and plans
• Support in managing development partners relations and ensure all contractual obligations under Women’s Political Leadership portfolio are served and fulfilled
• Maintain regular communication with partners
Qualification / Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Political Science, Philosophy, and Gender, Law, or any other relevant discipline.
• 3 years experience in a similar position, working on women’s political leadership issues and using a gendered analysis
• A proven commitment to women’s rights activism and demonstrable experience in social justice or human rights broadly;
• Proven interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people in a multi-cultural, multi-interest, multi-ethnic environment
• Ability to communicate and work effectively in English.
• Competency in French will be an added advantage.
