About DeKUT Department of Criminology and Security Management

Since its inauguration, the Department of Criminology and Security Management was initiated in 2015, under the School of Business Management and Economics.
The department is housed in Dedan Kimathi University of Technology, Nairobi Campus, Loita Street Pension Towers, 2nd Floor.
The department is nationally and internationally recognized for its unique approach in dealing with criminology and security studies. It’s incorporation of science and technology in applied criminology places it above the rest in the nation.
Our students develop profound knowledge and understanding of criminology and security management, tools, techniques and institutions deployed across the criminal justice system.

Criminology is the study of crime. It is the study of law making, law breaking, and societal response to criminal behavior. It is also the study of the police, the courts and penal systems, as well as the prevention and deterrence of criminal behavior.
Security management is the identification of an organization’s assets (including information assets), followed by the development, documentation, and implementation of policies and procedures for protecting these assets.

To facilitate a culturally diverse and stimulating learning environment that fosters criminological, forensic and security training, research and community linkage towards molding competent security practitioners.

b. To equip students with skills to undertake research in criminology and security management;

DeKUT Department of Criminology and Security Management Courses Offered

1. Bachelor of Science in Criminology and Security Management
The Bachelors Degree in Criminology and Security Management takes 8 Semesters, and there are new entrants each semester. The program entry requirements are aligned according to CUE regulations. The program is designed for those students who are interested in applied criminology and security management.
The program has three majors that are:-

a) Security Management and Loss Prevention Technology
This specialization is designed for those students who are interested in security management and loss prevention. It is target to those students who want to pursue security management in the corporate sector. Those course offered in here focuses on: Physical Security, Business and People Protection, Asset and Personnel Security, CCTV and Access Control Technology, etc.

b) Forensic Science and Criminal Investigation
This specialization is designed for those students who are interested in criminal investigation and forensic science. It is designed to advance skills in application of science and technology in criminal investigation. Course offered here include: Forensic Science and Technology, Forensic Psychology, Crime Scene Management, Finger Print Science, Fire and Explosives investigations, etc

c) Cyber Crime and Digital Forensic Technology
This specialization is designed for those students who are interested in Cyber Crime and Digital Forensic Technology. It is designed to advance students skills in investigation of computer related crimes. Courses offered here include: Digital Forensics, Data Mining, Internet Technologies, Cyber and Computer Forensics, etc.

2. Masters of Science in Forensics and Security Management
The Masters of Forensics and Security Management takes 2 Academic Years an equivalent of 4 Semesters, and there are new entrants each semester. The MSC program entry requirements are aligned according to CUE regulations. The MSC program is designed for those students who are interested in Corporate Forensic and Security Management.
The program has three majors that are:-

a) Corporate Forensics Management
This specialization is targeted at producing students interested in mastering Corporate Security. The course focuses on courses such as: Corporate Risk Management, Procurement Fraud, Financial Crime and Audit, Banking Fraud Investigation.
b) Security Management
This specialization is targeted at security managers, and focuses on: Risk Assessment, Intelligence Management, Regional and Global Security, Information Security Management, etc.
c) Cybercrime Forensics Management
This specialization is targeted at investigations of computer-related crimes, mobile phones and wireless devices. This course on offer include: Digital Forensics, Cyber Intelligence, Cyber Warfare, Cyber Incident Analysis, etc.
