Do Kenya Police Pay Tax

Do Kenya Police Pay Tax – See details below;

– The National Police Service Commission (NPSC) has directed officers with disabilities to start paying taxes starting the month of March 2018

– NPSC has also directed that the special allowances paid by graduate Constables be scrapped off

– Reports from the police headquarters indicate that the salaries section has already started implementing the directive

Police officers with disabilities will not be exempted from paying taxes beginning the month of March, TUKO.co.ke has learnt.

The National Police Service Commission (NPSC) has also directed that the special allowance paid to graduate Police Constables be scrapped off.

In Kenya, the law exempts the disabled from paying taxes for monthly earnings of KSh150,000 and below.

Graduate Constables were being paid a salary equivalent to what Inspectors are paid though they were not entitled to the same house allowance.

The NPSC CEO Joseph Onyango, in a letter dated Wednesday, March 7 directed the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet to stop additional payment and reverse the tax exemption immediately.

“The Commission has received reports that the salaries and terms of service for some officers have been varied on the basis that they have either acquired additional certificates (degree) or that their status have changed due to disability thus categorized as People With Disability (PWD),” Onyango wrote.

According to Mr Onyango, the Commission Board met and deliberated on the two issues before arriving at the decision.

“The Commission has made the decision that all the salary adjustments and variation based on the above be revoked and reverted to their original pay and designation,” he said.

“You are requested to implement the decision by stopping additional payment and/or reversing the tax exemption with immediate effect. Any variation should be effected procedurally after the cases are determined by the Commission,” he further directed.

Reports from the police headquarters on Friday, March 9 indicated that the salaries section had already started implementing the directive.

Most of the officers affected are not happy with the decision.

There are so many graduate Constables in the service who are waiting to join the various training colleges for their promotion courses.
