About JKUAT Zoology Department
The Department of Zoology is among the oldest Degree offering programmes in the Faculty of Science of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). The department was created in 1994 when the Department of Biological Sciences was split down to create the Biochemistry, Botany and Zoology Departments.
The University was founded in 1981 as a middle level college following a technical agreement between the Governments of Kenya and Japan. In 1988, it was elevated to a constituent college of Kenyatta University and was comprised of three faculties and one school; namely the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Engineering and School of Architecture and Building Sciences. The constituent college was elevated to a fully pledged university by an Act of Parliament in November 1994.
The Department offers a 4 year curriculum to Bachelor pf Science students studying Zoology. To gain entry in this program, students must attain the minimum University entry requirements and must also have at least B- in Biology or Biological Sciences in their secondary school exams.
In the first and second years of study, students take general zoology and in the third and fourth years of study, they may study zoology as a major option or pursue other options like Biomedical, Genomics, Ecology or Entomology as degree programmes etc. (3:3:1:1) or (3:3:2:2) or (3:3:3:2:1). Self sponsored undergraduate students may study in the Department of Zoology in the Alternative Degree Programme (ADP).
CORE UNITS IN THE DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY
FIRST YEAR OF STUDY
All first year students study 5 (five) Zoology units. In addition, they also study 4 (four) Botany units, 4 (four) Chemistry units, 3 (three) University units and 1 (one) Faculty of Science unit.
In the third year of study, Zoology major students may join any one the five zoology options of their choice. The options include Zoology regular, Biomedical, Genomics, Entomology and Ecology
JKUAT Zoology Department Undergraduate Entry Requirements
A student wishing to study Zoology must satisfy the minimum University entry requirements and other Faculty of Science regulations. A student must have passed Biology or Biological Science in the KCSE at a minimum grade of B-. In addition, a student must have passed any two subjects from the following alternatives:-

Physics
Mathematics
2 Alternative B
Physical Science
Mathematics
Geography/Agriculture
Course structure
In the third and fourth year of study, a student may study Zoology as a major, regular or minor subject, offered in the following programmes: 3.3.1.1, 3:3:2:2, 3:3:2:1, as stipulated in BSc (7) and (8) of the Faculty of Science regulations.
Majors in Zoology programmes include Zoology Option, Biomedical option, Ecology option, Entomology option and Genomic option. Any of these majors is offered to a student who has obtained at least an average of B in Zoology examinations in the required units in his or her second year of study.
JKUAT Zoology Department Alternative Degree Programme
Department of Zoology offers a number of degree programs for self sponsoring or non JAB students. The programs include: — BSc Zoology, BSc Physiology, BSc Genomic Science, BSc Ecology, BSc Biomedical Sciences, BSc Entomology that are available for Alternative Degree Programme.
To gain entry in any of these programs, a student must attain the minimum university entry requirements and also must have at least B- in Biology or Biological Sciences in their secondary school education. Those with Higher Diploma in relevant field of Biology or Medical Sciences will enter in third year whereas those with credit distinction, Diploma in second year and those with diploma passes in first year respectively.
The Department of Zoology offers research training opportunities at both MSc and PhD level in the following areas of specialization:
Parasitology
Entomology
Immunology
Ecology and Biology of conservation
The MSc courses are offered either as a full time student (coursework, research and thesis) for a period of two years or as a part-time student (Research and Thesis) for three years. PhD courses are offered through research and thesis only and for a period of three years.
