Since the first university was opened in Somaliland in 1998, there has been a rapid improvement in the higher education system. Mount Kenya University’s Hargeisa Campus complements the existing progress by introducing new international programmes that respond to the needs of this fast-emerging economy. Somaliland, which spreads along the Eastern horn of Africa along the Red Sea is country on the rebound.
In 1991, its infrastructure had been completely destroyed by 10 years of armed struggle with its Eastern neighbour
Somalia. Its education system was obliterated by war and anarchy, but it set about rebuilding and restoring. Primary
schools were given first priority. Amoud University – the country’s first post-war institution of higher learning was established in November 1998. Currently there are several colleges and more than 10 universities in the country.
