Key Responsibilities:
- Maintaining a high standard of professional knowledge, ethics and practices when dealing with customers, suppliers, peers, support staff, line managers and other key stakeholders at the farm.
- Ensuring the standard hygiene questionnaire is administered and filed for all visitors to the farm.
- Act as a gatekeeper to restrict access to sensitive areas.
- Collate from relevant departments all GAP records such as exact dates for planting, type of seeds/seedlings, inputs used and when used.
- Collate all sectional reports as required for harvest quantities by section, produce type and grade.
- Maintain a register documenting climate-smart practices in use on the farm.
- Keep up-to-date records of all documentation for each crop such as scouting dates, the findings and actions taken.
- Keep on file a register of the PHIs and MRLs reports per crop.
- Ensure that HR records on all employees are kept on file.
- Negotiate and retain Technical Experts. Keep on file all reports advising on what pesticides to use and rationale.
- maintain a plant protection products (PPP) glossary for quick reference and keep on file records pesticides used, when, where and who applied, re-entry intervals.
- Keep on file updated reports of Water Tests done as well as treatment done, if necessary, for the water to be used in post-harvest.
- Ensure farm signage and site map are visible, legible, and up to date.
- Developing a crop planting strategic framework in conjunction with technical experts.
- Overseeing all field clearing and planting activities in line with the strategic framework.
- Planning the production schedule to avoid supply gaps of adequate high-quality produce.
- Liaising with the logistics department to ensure timely collection of harvested produce from the farm.
- Disposing of grade 3 or rejects on the farm in accordance with the organization policy.
- Ensuring all workers on the farm are properly oriented and trained on the farm procedures and policies covering such aspects as hygiene, smoking, eating, chewing, and spitting.
- Developing and implementing continuous learning through regular feedback, coaching and training.
- Managing and developing production worker to achieve established goals of safety, environmental performance, production volumes, quality, service, and cost.
- Understanding, supporting, and adhering to the health and safety policies and procedures by communicating and promoting health and safety awareness on the farm.
- Ensuring all workers have access to clean drinking water.
- Ensuring all workers have access to changing rooms and washing facilities.
- Reviewing, analyzing, and making recommendations regarding safety, environmental performance, quality, profitability, expenses, productivity, and customer feedback.
- Managing and controlling the farms’ production budget.
- Supervise the plant and equipment manager to ensure all farm equipment and tools are always kept in a good clean useable state.
- Review on a regular basis all reports from plant and equipment manager for GAP-related tasks such as cleaning procedures for equipment in use for producing collection, transport, cleaning, and storage.
- Supervise the store clerks managing the different stores to ensure compliance with GAP for items.
- Keep track of inventory and provide regular management reports on inventory levels.
- Put in place and oversee proper implementation of all procedures to reduce theft, loss of use and spoilage of stored items.
- Ensuring the Water and Irrigation team is working effectively to maintain pumps, water tanks, irrigation systems and all equipment used in irrigation.
- Ensuring the water irrigation systems are always working optimally.
- Ensuring that the back-up plan for water and irrigation is always functioning.
Qualifications:
- Must have a qualification in Horticulture or equivalent.
- Must have a minimum of 5 years working in a similar role.
- Must demonstrate sound commercial judgment such as understanding the market dynamics.
- Must be a good negotiator able to secure desired outcomes with suppliers.
- Must have proven ability to balance and manage diverse stakeholder interests.
- Must be able to set priorities, meet deadlines, and accomplish set objectives.
- Positive attitude with an appetite for innovation, growth, and continuous improvement.
- Results-oriented – ability to develop visions, translate into strategies and execute at pace
- Possess excellent verbal skills, both spoken and written.
- Computer literate with a good knowledge of MS Office.
