Who is the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health?
The University of the Free State (UFS) Department of Paediatrics and Child Health promotes optimal child health, growth and development by delivering:
- a comprehensive medical service to our patients,
- advocating the rights of our children,
- educating and training all categories of health care workers and
- promoting research.
The Division Paediatric Cardiology are experts in dealing with heart disease in children from newborn to adulthood with modern, high-tech treatment – simultaneously training under- and postgraduate students whilst being actively involved in research.

Mission
The mission of the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health is to promote optimal child health, growth and development within the ambit of the Academic Health Complex by:
- Promoting a comprehensive approach to paediatric practice, including the prevention of disease,
- Delivering an outstanding medical service to our patients,
- Educating and training all categories of health care workers,
- Advocating the rights of children and
- Promoting relevant paediatric research.
Academic Children’s Trust (ACT)
As we celebrate the 25th anniversary of our specialist training program, it is important to recognise that we are entering a new era regarding the way in which we shall provide a service to the children of the surrounding communities, and the way in which we shall educate our students. The establishment of our Academic Children’s Trust (ACT) is just one of the many initiatives our Department is taking to ensure that we shall be able to meet the challenges of the future. My wish is that friends, colleagues, the community and industry will embrace this opportunity to support the Trust in order to enable us to fulfil our mission.
History
The first paediatric ward at the National Hospital, Bloemfontein was opened in the 1940s – certainly the ward was functional by 1949. Dr PMS Fischer, who commenced practice in December 1949 as Bloemfontein’s first registered paediatrician was the first paediatrician to be appointed at National Hospital. Dr CJ du Toit, Bloemfontein’s second paediatrician, commenced practice in 1965, with a part-time appointment at the National Hospital. Dr PJ Coetzee followed him in 1967, also with a part-time appointment in paediatrics, a post which he held until he left Bloemfontein in 1990.
Following the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of the Free State in 1971, Professor Fischer became the first Head of the new Department of Paediatrics, in 1972. He held this post until his retirement in 1976. Bloemfontein’s fourth paediatrician, Dr CJ Schoeman, began practice in 1974, also with a part-time appointment in the Department of Paediatrics until 1983, when he was appointed to the full-time staff.
Professor A Olinsky was appointed Head of Department after Prof Fischer had retired, and held the position until 1979. Dr W Karshagen was then acting Head until 1980. Prof CH van Niekerk was appointed Head of Department in 1980 until his departure from Bloemfontein in 1988. During this time the Department was renamed the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health. Dr KC Househam joined the department in 1983 as full-time consultant. He was appointed professor in 1986 and Head of the Department in 1988, following the resignation of Prof Van Niekerk. Dr BB Hoek was appointed associate professor in 1987 and full professor in 1989. Prof Househam resigned from academic practice in 1994 to become Head of the Free State Health Department. Prof Hoek was acting head of the Department until the appointment of Prof A Venter in 1996.
