About Machakos University Department of Linguistics and Languages

In a globalized, scientific and technologically centered community one discovers the vital need for a human face. In the Department of Linguistics and Languages we seek to re-imagine the fundamental

aspects of humanity such as language, identity, culture and creativity. As a matter of fact, most elements that elicit delight, imagination, cognition and communicative ability have their home in Languages and Literature. In the Department of Linguistics and Languages we offer diverse courses that are practical to help sharpen critical thinking, make our communication better, enhance our creativity and strengthen our performance capabilities. The department aims to revitalize artistic, communicative, and cultural experiences of students by exposing them to a wealth of languages and literature from both local, regional and the world over.
By studying in the Department of Linguistics and Languages, you will come to appreciate how humans acquire language, how language and communication function, how to teach and learn foreign languages, how to translate languages, how to become a creative writer or literary critic and what it takes to be a performing artist. Our graduates will be skilled individuals with the ability to change the world through practical oriented solutions for:

BACHELOR OF ARTS(ALL OPTIONS)

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor of Arts in the following options:-

(Counselling; Psychology; Sociology, Philosophy and Religious Studies; Kiswahili; Counselling Psychology; English and Linguistics; Gender and Development Studies; Literature; Geography; History,
Archeology and Political Studies)
(a) C+ for Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education
(KCSE) holders or its equivalent as determined by the
Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC)
(b) KNEC Diploma or its equivalent

MASTER OF ARTS(ALL OPTIONS)

Master of Arts in
❖ Philosophy and religion
❖ English and Linguistics
❖ Kiswahili
❖ Applied Linguistics
❖ Religious Studies (Christianity, Islam and ATR)
❖ Literature

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Education (Arts) Degree of at least Second Class Honours (Upper Division) or its Equivalent in related disciplines from
recognized University.

Those with Second Class (Lower Division) may be considered on condition that they have Grade C” and above in units relevant to heir areas of specialization

PHD IN APPLIED LINGUSTICS

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

A holder of a Master of Arts(MA) degree or its equivalent from a University or other institution recognized by University Senate OR A holder of a
Master degree from a recognized University in areas of specialization relevant to disciplines in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
