SEKU Department of Nursing Sciences – see details below…
Nursing professionals constitute the largest percentage of health care providers in Kenya. They offer a variety of services at all levels of health care facilities from households to sophisticated urban hospitals. The services range from preventive, promotive to curative. Surprisingly, Approximately 80% of healthcare services are provided by nurses at competitive cost compared with other health-care cadres. Policy makers in Kenya have recognized the key role of nurses in the provision of health-care and the need to produce a critical mass of well trained nurses.
South Eastern Kenya University’s (SEKU) Bachelor of Science in Nursing is a response to the health sector reform. In Kenya, health-care budgets are stretched to the limit. Consequently the quality of patient care and nursing management has suffered due to the limitation of the number of nurses deployed in the national and county government health facilities. Educating nurses at bachelor degree level will strengthen both county and national health sector and contribute to an overall improvement of the health status of the populations. Moreover, SEKU graduate will be an all round nurse who is competent to take up research, teaching & learning as well as leadership roles in both community, learning institutions, programs and clinical areas.
SEKU’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing programmes will combine theory, clinical and research as well as elective placements to allow the graduates navigate areas of interests. The Department of Nursing will involve communities, with students offering service by attending community diagnosis and participating in volunteer programmes. Our program offers a unique opportunities for students from all counties of Kenya to obtain high qualification in the nursing profession in order to improve the state of health in their own communities.
