History

Aspire, inspire and transform…

Strathmore University launched the School of Tourism and Hospitality (STH) in 2008 offering full time and part time (evening) degree programmes in hospitality and tourism management.

STH was established with the aim of uplifting the hospitality profession translating domestic work into professional work through education and professional training to provide competent workforce and entrepreneurs in the tourism and hospitality industry.

This was in line with the teachings of St. Josemaria Escriva who desired that there be training institutions and universities dedicated to the formation of the work of the home where persons can be professionally trained to carry out these tasks with the greatest perfection.

Hospitality is creating a “home away from home”, a tagline most often quoted by hotels and accommodation providers. It is a common fact that everyone needs the warmth of a home and if this is missing then it becomes very difficult to learn how to relate in a truly human way. From this perspective, the homemaker plays a very important role in the well-being of society.

The hospitality discipline focuses mainly on the care of the human person, both in the tangible and intangible aspects of service. The presence of this discipline tends to humanize society and will deeply influence the human tone of the environment.

ASPIRE, INSPIRE AND TRANSFORM

The School of Tourism and Hospitality (STH) aims to influence both staff and students to dream and pursue excellence in order to transform the industry and society.

MISSION

We foster integral development through education, promoting excellence in service, upholding ethical principles and nurturing entrepreneurial spirit to produce professionals of global standard.

VISION

To be the anchor of transformational education for a thriving hospitality and tourism industry leading to enhanced quality of life.

CORE VALUES

STH is guided by Strathmore University’s core values and so adapts the following:

  • Excellence through sanctification of work

We strive for excellence in work and highest quality output reflecting the joy of service as we echo the spirit of the Founder of the School: “Whatever you do, do it well. Poorly done things cannot be offered to God”.

  • Integrity

We uphold ethical practices of staff and students and foster integrity in all their actions.

  • Commitment

We value personal commitment which comes with the exercise of freedom and responsibility, which is fostered through personal attention given to staff and students.

  • Collegiality

We respect one another’s commitment to a common purpose and work together to achieve the common goal.

  • Creativity and innovation

We foster innovation and enhance creativity through experiential activities within and outside the classroom to equip learners with skills and tools for innovation and adaptability.

  • Life-long learning

We develop programmes and training courses that contribute to a person’s development of mind and body, intelligence, sensitivity, aesthetic appreciation and spirituality throughout their lives.

  • Social responsibility

We serve society through education, research and community outreach projects organized by students and staff. Hospitality and tourism education has a direct impact on the family and society as it is a service profession. Through our home management programmes, we make a direct contribution to the betterment of society and improve quality of life in the family.

The tourism and hospitality industry is the fastest growing sector of the world’s economy. It requires innovative business minds, creative management and strong passion to drive the industry’s socio-economic potential to full realization.

The School for Tourism and Hospitality brings you this opportunity to be part of global leadership in hospitality and tourism.

We foster integral development of the human person through education, promoting excellence in work, upholding sound moral principles and nurturing entrepreneurial spirit to produce professionals of global standards.

We aspire to be the benchmark of excellence in hospitality and tourism education, make an impact in the industry and improve quality of life through service to society.
