ADVERTISEMENT FOR ADMISSION TO MASTER BY RESEARCH AND PUBLICATION PROGRAMMES UNDER Sida SUPPORT FOR A PERIOD OF 2015-2020

Programme: Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs)

Sub-theme 1: Building Capacity for Development of Innovative and Integrated Interventions and Monitoring of Emergency of Resistance in The Control and Elimination of Malaria and NTDs

Sub-theme 4: Strengthening research training capacity for malaria vector control and treatment using natural products from Tanzania respectively

1. Introduction

The malaria and NTD Program is multidisciplinary drawing MUHAS members from the school of Medicine, Pharmacy, Public Health and Social Science and Institute of Traditional medicine. The Program is coordinated by Professor Omary MS Minzi and supported by Sida -Swedish organisation for developing countries. The Program has been training postgraduate students through the Directorate of Postgraduate Studies at MUHAS.

The department of Parasitology and medical Entomology in the school of Public health and Institute of Traditional medicine are planning to recruit an MSc candidate each for the Year 2017.

The 2 are looking for suitable Tanzanian candidates to pursue Master degree by research and publication within this the areas. The candidate in Parasitology and Medical Entomology will specialize in Neglected tropical Diseases while the one in ITM will focus on Tanzanian plants with antimalarial activity.

2. Funding:

(i)The financial support will be provided by Swedish International Development Agency (Sida) through the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) under the Malaria & Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Program

(ii)The support of Master (MSc) students will include a student stipend, tuition fees and costs related to the research for a period of 2 years

NB: Applicants should note that the scholarship will not provide salaries

3. Eligibility criteria

(i)For Neglected tropical diseases, graduates from recognized Universities having, MD degree, BPharm or its equivalent and Candidates with Bachelor of science in Molecular Biology, Bachelor of science in Biotechnology and Laboratory sciences are eligible

For Institute of Traditional Medicine, the candidate must be holder of BPharm degree, BSc Chemistry or BSc degrees with Chemistry; Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Sciences in Parasitology and Medical Entomology.

(ii)A minimum of lower-second class with cumulative GPA of 2.7 or above in undergraduate degree.

(iii)Each applicant must satisfy all the general requirements set out under the regulations for a Master degree by Research and Publications of the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences as indicated in the new MUHAS postgraduate guidelines of 2016

4. Other required qualities

(i)The applicant must be creative, hard-working, with good communication skills, and with genuine interest to purse a research career

(ii)Should be able to work independently

(iii)Should be able to organize and work as a team

(iii)Certified copies of ordinary level secondary education, advanced level education and degree certificates

(iv)Certified copies of undergraduate Academic transcripts

(v)Up to date Curriculum Vitae (CV)

(vi)A concept note of 2-4 pages presenting a synopsis of the study to be conducted in this field of research.

6. Deadline for submission of application

The deadline for submission of applications and concept notes will be at the closing office of 25thJune, 2017.
