About the Programme
Action Against Hunger began its work in Uganda since 1980 in response to famine conditions in the Karamoja Region where we saved the lives of undernourished children while building the capacities of the community. We have been continuously operating in Uganda for the last 22 years delivering interventions in nutrition, WASH and Food Security and Livelihoods. For the last three years and with the same aim of saving lives and empowering the community, we have been working in the Northern part of Uganda to save lives of refugees and host communities while providing long term solutions to hunger. We are currently operating in and around Bidibidi, Kyangwali, Adjumani and Kyriandongo refugee settlements. Some of the
major donors we have worked with include but not omitted to, ECHO, DFID, SIDA, WFP, UNCICEF, EUTF and French Embassy.
Job Summary: The Community Nutrition Officer will support implementation of community lead nutrition activities under World Food Programme.

Support implementation of the Nutrition activities, supervision and management of the staff under their supervision line with donor requirements.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Technical Support
- Strengthen the linkages between community based health structures for early case identification, referral and management of Moderate Acute Malnutrition.
- Liaise with the Health Assistants to ensure that VHTs are selected in all project locations in with the recommended MOH guidelines
- Liaise with the district local government and other partners to organize and conduct VHT monthly and quarterly meetings
- Implement the mother care groups approach in the areas of operation by supporting the community Based Facilitators in the identification of care groups, selection of house hold support groups and behavior change promotion among the communities.
- Organize a capacity development action plan for VHTs
- Monitor VHT knowledge gap and build their capacities regarding the needs identified
- Facilitate beneficiary identification of children 24-59 months in the targeted settlements
- Supervise operations of VHTs during distribution, and carry out on job support on IYCF
- Provide relevant information in the development and dissemination of relevant IEC materials on nutrition activities such as IYCF, ENA
- Develop concept notes for the drama groups and community dialogues for community sensitization
- Provide care groups with the necessary working tools that they need for the implementation of activities such as meetings, modular trainings and conducting food demonstrations.
- Participate in the periodic Weight for Height nutrition screening to assess for GAM level in the community
- Prepare project progress reports, success stories and lessons learned during project implementation.
- Liaise with the district VHT coordinator to ensure active engagement of VHTs in the catchment area
- Actively participate in events organized in both the refugee and host community setting and with other sections of Action Against Hunger and all other stakeholders in the response Gender Equality Commitments
- Foster an environment that supports values of women and men, and equal access to information.
- Provide a work environment where women and men must be evaluated and promoted based on their skills and performance.

Fiscal Responsibility
- Work closely with the program Manager in updating the project BFU in relation to the activity implementation plan on regular basis, ensuring that relevant documentation on agricultural activities is filed and archived.
Physical Demands
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to have field travels up to 60% interfacing with beneficiaries and partly the district agricultural officer/extension staff. 40% of the time will be spent sitting for long hours to concentrate on office work, including typing, and turn out heavy volumes of work accurately, within short time frames under stressful situations in the context of a moderately noisy office with many interruptions. Must be able to proofread own work accurately so that only minor corrections are needed on an infrequent basis.

Working Conditions, Travel and Environment
The duties of the job require regular job attendance five days per week. Must be available to work outside normal office hours or on the weekends as required.
Must be able to travel as required for standard domestic and international business purposes. Whileperforming the duties of this job in the field, the employee may be exposed to precarious settings under high security risks and/or very basic living conditions and outside weather conditions, as well as to infectious diseases.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal applicant must hold a Bachelor degree in Nutrition or related field from a recognized institute
- At least 3 years’ experience in implementing a project on Community Based Supplementary Programs and Maternal Child Health Program.
- Extensive knowledge and experience in implementation of Community Nutrition and health programs
- Effective communication skills (written and oral) in English
- Knowledge of word processor, spreadsheet and software use like ENA, SPSS plus other programs advantageous
- Demonstrated experience and/or personal commitment to promoting gender equality within the work
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions independently
- Extremely flexible with the ability to cope with stressful situations
- Excellent reporting skills with good oral and written communication skills
- Knowledge of the local language is an added advantage
- Diplomatic and culturally sensitive
