About US:

StrongMinds Uganda is a not for profit Non-Governmental Organization that has been implementing group talk therapy, based on interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT or IPT-G), for impoverished women with depression in Uganda since 2014. Therapy sessions are led by well-trained, well-educated staff, and have been successful in reducing depression symptoms and increasing patients’ overall functionality and well-being. StrongMinds Uganda currently implements programs in the districts of Kampala, Wakiso, Mukono and Iganga.

Job Summary: The Graduate Interns will be responsible for facilitating the implementation of Group Interpersonal Psychotherapy (G-IPT) program activities in the assigned location.  He/she will identify, diagnose and recruit individuals with depression to join G-IPT program; treat individuals with depression within their own communities using proven medical health screening tools adapted to local conditions and proven G-IPT sessions.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Tasked with the mobilization and sensitization of community members
  • Conducting pre-assessment/screening of community members
  • Pre-grouping of clients
  • Conducting IPTG weekly sessions of depressed clients
  • Reporting and Record keeping of client information
  • Attending weekly debrief sessions
  • Data entry using smart phone
  • Documentation of significant change story/ lessons learnt

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The Graduate Intern should preferably hold a diploma in Guidance & Counseling, Community Psychology, Social Work, Social Administration, Development Studies; Nursing or any relevant health or social work qualification.
  • A minimum of 6 months experience working with the communities running/implementing Group interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT-G)
  • Demonstrated interest in social work and helping others.
  • Understanding of self-help approaches and empowerment in mental health.
  • Good group mobilization, facilitation and presentation skills
  • Experience working with people with depression and their families.
  • Experience in running self- help groups
  • Good verbal and communication skills
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to develop, inform and sustain professional relationships, partnerships and networks.
  • Computer literacy skills in MS Office applications, word, excel, Spread sheets;
  • Ability and willingness to undertake physical movements between and within communities mostly by public means
  • Language: English, Luganda and Lusoga.   All these languages will be tested during interviews.
