About US:

The MRC/UVRI Uganda Virus Research Unit on AIDS was established following a request in 1988 from the Uganda Government to the British Government for collaboration on the research of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection and AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency. The Unit is a center of excellence in HIV/AIDS related research. It conducts large-scale epidemiological and intervention studies, clinical trials, virological and immunological research and behavioural studies, and has generated a wealth of research results that have been used to inform policy and practice that have led to a large number of scientific publications in peer reviewed journals over time.

About the Study

The OMWaNA study is a partnership between the (MRC/UVRI), the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and Makerere University. It is a randomized controlled trial (RCT) whose primary aim is to examine the impact of Kangaroo mother care (KMC) initiated before stabilisation on mortality within 7 days relative to standard care amongst neonates <2000g. The study will be conducted in four sites in Uganda: Jinja Regional Referral Hospital, Masaka Regional Referral Hospital, Entebbe Regional Referral Hospital and Iganga District Hospital.

Job Summary:  The Medical officer shall be responsible for the active recruitment into the OMWANA study according to standard operating procedures. In addition, he/she will provide care for study participants and when possible other patients within the neonatal unit as a member of the neonatal team.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Participant recruitment and retention- Obtains informed consent, screens for study eligibility, enrols and follows up study participants
  • Clinical care- Provides clinical care to study participants and conducts referrals as appropriate
  • Data collection and management- Collects data as required by the protocol, completes source documents and CRFs and submits them for data entry, and resolves queries
  • Administrative- supervises other study team members
  • Conduct of continued professional development (CPD) trainingactivities and maintenance of documentation of such trainings
  • Preparation of progress reports to UVRI REC and regulatory bodies (UNCST and NDA) when required.
  • PI designee duties- performs other duties assigned by the project leaders

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The ideal candidate for the Medical Research Council (MRC) UK / UVRI) Medical Officer job must hold a Bachelor’s Degree medicine and surgery.
  • Diploma in Clinical medicine, Health Sciences or a related field from a recognised institution.
  • Postgraduate qualification in related specialty is an added advantage.
  • One year of experience in clinical practice.
  • One year of experience in a research setting working on clinical trials.
  • Experience in newborn health research or other relevant child health outcome research is an added advantage.
  • Previous experience of implementing research study protocols.
  • Previous experience in research or project leadership
  • Previous experience in training and managing small research or project team
  • Understanding of ICH/GCP for human research.
  • Certification in ICH/GCP for human research is an added advantage.
  • Ability to initiate and/or support public engagement and communication          activities
