Job Title:    Senior Analyst –  Microbiology and Chemistry (2 Jobs)

About US:

Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) is a statutory body under the Ministry of Trade Industry and Cooperatives responsible for standardization, Quality Assurance, Metrology and Laboratory Testing (SQMT) with the objective of facilitating fair trade, promoting local industries and Consumer protection. The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) is a statutory body under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Co-operatives established by the UNBS Act Cap 327 and became operational in 1989. It is governed by the National Standards Council and headed by the Executive Director who is responsible for the day-to-day operation of UNBS.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Develop test methods, provide technical guidance and perform laboratory analysis to ensure accurate and timely test results in line with the laboratory objectives.
  • Initiate and develop appropriate test methods and procedures
  • Carry out none routine tests on samples received for the first time and any other complex tests
  • Conduct and participate in research relevant to standards development and document the latest methods and technology in testing to be adopted by UNBS
  • Develop a system for proper storage and control of information, records, and documents use.
  • Manage the proficiency testing provision.
  • Verify and interpret test results by other Analysts to ensure accuracy
  • Monitor, maintain and administer the stock control and analyze cost system functions for the Laboratory
  • Provide technical guidance in the management of the Laboratory in consultation with the Head of Laboratory
  • Prepare annual, quarterly and monthly reports for the activities handled by the laboratory

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The applicant for the UNBS Senior Analyst – Microbiology and Chemistry job opportunity should hold a Post Graduate qualification in Food Science or Chemistry from a recognized University/Institute
  • Honours degree in Food Science or Chemistry or any other food/Chemistry related field.
  • Should have completed approved competence development training in ISO 17025
  • At least five years’ experience, 3 years of which at Officer level
  • Hands-on supervisory competencies with capacity to multi-task and deliver results efficiently with minimal supervision
  • Experience of working in a recognized Microbiology or Chemistry Laboratory will be an added advantage
  • Must be computer literate with skills in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and the Internet applications
  • The successful candidate must have a high level of integrity and professionalism, Communication, Teamwork and Analytical skills and needs to be a team player, an excellent communicator with good oral communication and presentation skills.
  • Age: Between 30 and 45 years
