The Medical Research Council (MRC UK) is an internationally recognised centre of excellence with dominant research themes in the areas of HIV and emerging infections, vaccines and immunity, and chronic diseases and cancer. Through a multidisciplinary approach, intersecting basic science, epidemiological research, social-behavioural research and the conduct of new intervention evaluation studies, the Unit contributes knowledge on changing epidemics and diseases, the evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and prevention and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and worldwide. Following the signing of strategic transfer agreements between the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Medical Research Council (MRC UK), the Unit formally joined LSHTM on 1st February 2018. The exciting new partnership will boost research capacity into current and emerging health issues in Africa and throughout the world. The Unit is based at the UVRI Entebbe campus with established outposts in Kalungu, Masaka, Wakiso and Kampala Districts.

 

Job Summary:  The Driver will support the unit’s activities for effective delivery by driving of vehicles in its areas of operation under the direct supervision of the fleet Supervisor as per the provided schedules. The Driver will support all logistics related issues.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • To drive designated unit’s vehicle in safe and careful manner and ensure that all passengers are secure and not to carry any unauthorized passengers, load or carry fire arms (guns);
  • Ensure all vehicles are duly checked e.g. engine oil, battery terminals, lighting system etc. before any movement is effected;
  • Maintain the vehicle log book and record accurately kilometre readings, fuel taken, the activity assignments, parts/spares replaced etc.;
  • Maintains the relevant forms (Vehicle Ledger and Vehicle Fuel Forms) assigned to the vehicle and to submit them to the fleet supervisor at the end of each month;
  • The driver is responsible for all loading and unloading of goods into the vehicle and ensures their security and condition while in the vehicle;
  • Assist in updating logistics on the expiry dates of the insurance licenses;
  • Ensure that the vehicle is serviced promptly by monitoring next service kilometre and suggests or reports any necessary repairs that need to be made;
  • Reports any accident or driving incident, even minor, to the Fleet supervisor as quickly as possible and completes necessary reports;
  • Obeys all road traffic regulations, including the wearing of seat belts. The driver must ensure that he is in possession of a driving license when on driving duties. The payment of over speeding, wrong parking and other road traffic offence fines is the driver’s responsibility. The driver should note that when he is personally responsible for an accident, a sanction could be imposed;
  • Ensures that the allocated vehicle is kept clean and the interior is tidy.
  • Ensure vehicles are not overloaded with passengers or supplies.
  • Carries out any delivery or collection duties as may be necessary (letters cheques, visas, minor procurements, etc.);
  • The driver should make sure that fulfilment of his tasks is carried out with full care preserving the confidentiality of all matters related to NIRAS – IP’s operations;
  • Ensure that all vehicle movements are authorized;
  • Assist in any logistics function assigned and any other duties from time to time;
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor in his or her absence, his or her designate; and,
  • Ensuring that renew of organizational vehicle licenses is carried out in a timely manner by Management.

 

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The ideal candidate must hold a UCE / O-Level certification;
  • Should possess a valid driving license for classes B, CM, DL and DM;
  • At least five years of experience in driving in a reputable organization;
  • Should possess comprehensive working knowledge on vehicle maintenance;
  • Proficiency in basic computer is an added advantage;
  • Certificate in Defensive Driving and customer care is an added advantage; and,
  • Good communication skills.
