About Peace Corps:

The Peace Corps is an agency of the United States Government, which sends American Volunteer development workers to assist in capacity building and technical assistance activities in over 70 countries worldwide.  The United States has enjoyed diplomatic relations with Uganda for over 30 years.  Ambassador Scott H. DeLisi currently heads the U.S Mission to Uganda.  The Mission is composed of several offices and organizations all working under the auspices of the Embassy and at the direction of the Ambassador.

  • Centers for Disease Control
  • Peace Corps 

Job Summary:  The Language and Cross-Cultural Facilitator (LCF) is responsible for planning, delivering and evaluating language and intercultural training at Pre-Service, In-Service and other required opportunities for Peace Corps/Uganda. Working hand in hand with the Language & Cross-Cultural Coordinator, the LCF is expected to offer ongoing language and intercultural support to new Volunteers by carrying out interest survey (needs assessment) of each Volunteers so as to come out with strategies to address them in subsequent trainings.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

Area of Expertise:

  • Design lesson plans and deliver them to the Peace Corps Trainees, using appropriate techniques and methodology
  • Prepare at least 10 session designs during TOT, which are ready to be delivered in the initial weeks of PST
  • Conduct language classes in the Ugandan Language of expertise
  • Make daily Trainee assessments and adjust lesson plans according to the learning needs of Trainees
  • Actively participate in Pre-Service Training research for collection of teaching materials relevant for language-technical and Cross Cultural training
  • Tutor learners with special needs as, and when, such needs arises

Cross-Cultural Informant Guide:

  • Using your knowledge as a Ugandan, act as a guide in teaching about Ugandan cultures, with specific emphasis on the uniqueness of your cultural grouping
  • The incumbent will be using their expertise in language teaching to impart cultural knowledge to Trainees during formal sessions
  • Works closely with homestay families in fulfilling the Trainer role for the Trainee
  • Serve as a link between the trainee and homestay family in clarifying any training related issues that may arise
  • Perform daily check-ins for the Trainee to gauge their adjustment process
  • Equip the Trainees with skills to take care of their own safety and security by helping them learn the appropriate language, understand the local customs and cultural practices and dynamics of the political and social set up of the communities that may impact on Trainees’ lives

Training Design/Implementation:

  • Actively participate in designing an integrated Pre-Service Training Program
  • Integrate technical training through close collaboration and guidance from Program Specialist

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain file of written lesson plans, handouts and other language supplementary materials for PST and IST
  • Send weekly reports to the Language & Cross-Cultural Coordinator detailing the progress of each Trainee, what has been covered, what needs improvement and the following week’s plans
  • Routinely inform the Language and Cross-Cultural Coordinator periodically about the learning progress of each Trainee and on matters related to the Trainee’s general suitability for service.

Team Member:

  • Participate in team building activities designed to develop team spirit and responsibility
  • Attend meetings as scheduled
  • Share individual talents and expertise with colleagues

Other: Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Language & Cross-Cultural Coordinator and the Training Manager

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The ideal candidates for the US Peace Corps Language and Cross-Cultural Facilitator job should hold Diplomas in the area of specialization
  • Past experience in teaching a local Ugandan language preferably to Peace Corps Trainees.
  • Significant experience in teaching and analyzing a Ugandan language.
  • Past experience in adult education training and community development
  • Excellent interpersonal, counseling and cross-cultural  skills
  • Good judgment and problem solving ability
  • Management and supervision experience and/or aptitude.
  • Money and resources management experience and/or aptitude.
  • Willingness to live away from home in a training location for the duration of the training (in a rented house or Guest House)
  • Willingness to be on call all days of training including Sundays and put in extra time past language training to serve as Coordinator of the local training Satellite.
  • Applicants must be legally able to work in Uganda.

Language Proficiency: Level IV English ability. Excellent communication skills in English and at least one Ugandan language
