About USAID Project:
Fistula Care is an Associate Cooperative Agreement Award granted by USAID to EngenderHealth. The purpose of Fistula Care is to strengthen the capacity of hospitals to provide fistula repair, to enhance community and facility understanding and practices to prevent fistula, to gather, analyze, report and use data to strengthen the quality of fistula services, and to strengthen the supportive environment to institutionalize fistula prevention, repair and reintegration programs.
Job Summary: The Program Officer-Medical will provide support to clinical prevention related activities of the project, including service delivery, training, supervision, quality improvement and logistics management. Currently, the focus is on quality improvement for family planning (FP) services and related training in a bid to increase access to quality FP as a fistula prevention strategy. The incumbent will provide support to the SRH&R strategy of the youth component as well as promote use of the partograph for monitoring of labour. The primary supervisor is the Program Associate – Medical.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work closely with Program Associate-Medical, to support capacity building and implementation of fistula prevention activities i.e Family Planning integration, Partograph and Emergency Obstetric Care (EMOC), logistics management and infection prevention
- Actively participate in planning and organizing for training activities in Family planning clinical skills and related on-site mentoring and coaching.
- Offer technical support in building capacity for and implementation of integration of Post-Partum Family Planning at project supported sites including increasing access to use of IUDs etc
- Promote access to LARCs (Long Acting Reversible Contraceptives) and permanent methods including vasectomy
- Support OJT (On-Job-Training) of NXT implanon in a bid to promote its scale up and integration at FC+ supported sites
- Offer support in implementation of the rights and choice based approaches in provision of family planning counselling using the REDI approach while promoting method mix
- Provide technical assistance in institutionalization of the mentoring and coaching strategy at all levels to scale up use of partograph for labor monitoring at lower-level HC IIIs that provide referrals to larger hospitals
- Actively participate in routine follow up and technical support supervision of health workers to ensure quality of FP services at project sites as well as monitor and maintain the use of the Partograph
- Support training on infection prevention and waste management and disposal interventions at fistula care project supported sites including strengthening Infection Prevention and Control Committees
- Coordinate routine data collection and analysis on family planning and the partograph with M&E Program team
- Document and disseminate, lessons learned, success stories and best practices in the medical/clinical domains covered by the project
- Provide support to the youth strategy, monitor and strengthen implementation of in and out of school youth activities and documentation of lessons learnt.
- Represent EngenderHealth in related meetings and activities at district and national levels as delegated
- Perform any other duties as may be assigned periodically.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal candidate should hold a graduate degree in Public Health or a related field preferably a registered midwife/nurse
- Competency in Family Planning Clinical Skills particularly long acting methods (Implant and IUD insertion and removal skills) and related quality improvement activities.
- Has training skills and experience in health related training
- At least five years’ experience in health programs
- A minimum of two years’ experience in management and provision of maternal child health and family planning skills including youth and adolescents.
- Knowledge of reproductive health services including family planning, infection prevention, working with communities, youth and adolescents.
- Clinical background in maternal health and family planning
- Excellent interpersonal skills and capable of coordinating teamwork and high performing teams
- Demonstrated working relationships with district/country officials from the public, private and NGO sectors
- Excellent writing and communication skills and abilities
- Ability to conduct regular field visits up to 40% of the time to monitor the various activities to ensure high standards of programming, effective use of resources and to provide support to partners where required.
- Written and spoken fluency in English required.
