Job Summary: The Safety and Security Coordinator is mainly responsible for ensuring that the organization is effectively managing security risks posed to the personnel/ staff, assets, programs and operations of the organisation. The job includes continuous security risk assessment and providing advice on safety and security risk management; the maintenance of appropriate measures and guidelines; ensuring that field working practices are robust and that all staff are aware of, trained in, and adhere to safety & security policies guidelines and procedures. Integral to the position is the ability to work successfully with field teams to cultivate capacity and motivation, thereby ensuring field-based responsibility for security analysis and management. The position holder may also be called upon as and when necessary to provide support in humanitarian responses.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The ideal candidate for the Save the Children Safety and Security Coordinator job opportunity should hold a degree in a related field. Formal security training or demonstrated experience in safety & security management is of added advantage.
  • At least four years of practical experience in safety and security.
  • Previous experience in liaising with government, NGOs, UN agencies and security agencies.
  • Prior exposure and experience of incident reporting, information collation and analysis.
  • Ability to balance demands of beneficiary and security actors while maintaining appropriate contextual security advice and coordination.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including influencing, negotiation and pragmatism
  • Ability to present complex information in a concise and compelling manner.
  • Possess a high degree of common sense and a genuine interest in people.
  • Excellent planning, coordination and reporting skills, with the ability to organize a substantial workload comprised of complex, diverse tasks and responsibilities.
  • Ability and willingness to dramatically change work practices and hours, in the event of emergencies
  • Appropriate security training and management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Previous experience in security management.
  • Background in large international non-governmental organisation or other international development organisation.
  • Skilled and experience in access and other database/mapping systems.
  • Prior exposure and experience working with local partners and District Local Government in Child Rights Governance, Health, Nutrition, Education, HIV/AIDS or Child Protection is an added advantage.
  • Excellent analytical skills and strategic planning abilities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain conducive collegial relations and perform effectively as a member of a team.
  • Willingness to travel and work in hard-to-reach areas, occasionally under strenuous conditions.
  • Computer literacy and excellent documentation skills are a must.
  • Highly developed cultural awareness and ability to work well in an international environment with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Ability to intervene with crisis management or troubleshooting as necessary.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills including influencing, negotiation and coaching.
  • Excellent time management and planning capacity.
  • Availability and willingness to work extra hours during times of humanitarian responses.
