IAU is actively involved in programs geared towards the protection and improvement of lives of disadvantaged people living in urban and rural areas in Uganda and in the Great Lakes Region. InterAid Uganda is focused on its thematic areas of Rights Protection, Education, Livelihood & Food Security, Health (HIV&AIDS; Malaria; Maternal and Reproductive Health), Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH), Environment and Disaster Management and good Management and Governance systems.

Job Summary: The Mental Health Counsellor will carry out mental health counselling for clients with the best practices for mental health counselling and ensure access to mental health services optimally by clients.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

Strategic Direction: Planning, coordinating and implementiong HIV activities at the program as planned.

Stakeholder management

  • Managing the partnership with Mulago Mental Health Unit and Butabika Hospital to facilitate good mental health at the program office and in the refugee communities as planned.
  • Networking with public especially KCCA Health facilities and private health service providers for access to services by our persons of concern.

Process Management.

  • Counsel clients with emphasis on prevention of mental health complications.
  • Work with individuals and groups to promote optimum mental health.
  • Help individuals deal with addictions, PTSD, substance abuse, suicide and stress management.
  • Assist and care for refugees, provide personal assistance, medical attention and emotional support.
  • Document and record information from counselling sessions
  • Refer cases that need to be managed at health facilities and ensure prompt follow up.
  • Work closely with other sector counsellors.
  • Compiling weekly, monthly, quarterly, annual and specific activity reports and ensure timely submission
  • Documenting the best practices implemented, success stories and case studies of the community level changes for dissemination and learning

Support to staff & other Managers: Providing support to the health unit in line with support to mental health patients.

Departmental Administration: Preparing requisitions for all financial transactions i.e. requisitions for money, drugs, and subsistence allowances and ensure timely accountability for mental health clients.

Risk Management: Identifying, assessing and developing strategies to mitigate against risks that may happen in the section.

Compliance: Complying with policies and procedures during the implementation of the activities.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The ideal candidate for the InterAid Uganda Limited (IAU) Mental Health Counsellor job opportunity should preferably hold a Degree in Medical/Health, Social work, Social Sciences, Counselling, Psychology or its equivalent from a recognized Institution.
  • Additional post graduate training in Mental Health Counselling is desirable
  • At least four years of relevant work experience in counselling related to mental health
  • Should be a good listener
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Good report writing skills
