The Reach A Hand mission is to empower young people in Uganda aged 12-24 years with complete information, skills and tools to enable them to live healthy, focused and productive lives.
Job Summary: The Advocacy Officer is mainly responsible for supporting Reach a Hand Uganda’s (RAHU’s) communications, advocacy and knowledge management with increased focus on upstream work, including stronger policy-advocacy and communication and increased quality of knowledge management within the organization. The Advocacy Officer will be expected to support the Communications department with a keen focus on advocacy and knowledge management working together closely with Communications colleagues and reporting directly to Communications and Advocacy Manager.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Tasked with the implementation of RAHU’s Advocacy Strategy.
- Monitoring and analysis of political processes with regard to Uganda’s Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) environment.
- Developing strategic recommendations, advocacy materials, briefing papers and other advocacy documents in particular, specific analysis of Uganda’s SRHR related policies, frameworks and laws, and draft publications for RAHU target audience.
- Supporting the Communications and Advocacy Manager in coordinating advocacy activities with partners.
- Representing RAHU at external events as well as towards policy makers, at advocacy coalitions, CSO partners and with other external stakeholders.
- Supporting colleagues in the communications and advocacy department through documentation and reporting of the organisation’s international advocacy programmes and other administrative tasks as necessary.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant should preferably hold a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university.
- One to two years of working experience on AYSRH advocacy
- Fluent oral and written English with very strong editing skills
- Strong, persuasive oral and written communication skills
- Knowledge of sexual and reproductive health and rights.
- Extensive knowledge of Uganda’s policy-making processes, health-, research- and youth empowerment policy matters.
- Strong knowledge / understanding of how the Ugandan policies feed into international agreements/ commitments.
- Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills.
