Center for Health, Human Rights & Development (CEHURD) is an indigenous, non-profit, research, and advocacy organization which is pioneering the enforcement of human rights and the justiciability of the right to health in Eastern Africa. Founded in 2007 and registered under the laws of Uganda, it was formed to contribute towards ensuring that laws and policies are used as the principal tools for the promotion and protection of health and human rights of populations in Uganda, and the East African region

Job Summary:  The Research and Grants Associate will support the Center for Health, Human Rights and Development’s (CEHURD) research processes and coordination of CEHURD’s fundraising. This is a dynamic role that will require the successful candidate to provide strategic contributions to the design and implementation of research projects and evidence-based advocacy initiatives, fundraising, and coordination of regional health equity initiatives that correspond with CEHURD’s Strategic Plan.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

Research

  • Support CEHURD in producing and disseminating high quality evidence-based research to inform processes on health, human rights, and equity
  • Serve as an advisor on research and practice enhancement at CEHURD, to include supporting the ethical clearance process for research, developing research tools, designing methodologies, and contributing to data collection, analysis, and dissemination
  • Develop new evidence based solutions that are responsive to changing needs and identified gaps and prioritizing the piloting of new relevant initiatives in CEHURD’s programs

Grants: Support fundraising efforts for CEHURD’s research and health equity work, as well as other activities

Networking: Develop and manage a database for CEHURD’s work and integrate knowledge and practice models across all CEHURD programs

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The ideal candidate for the Global Health Corps Research and Grants Associate career placement should hold a Bachelor’s degree*
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in public health or any other health science, statistics, economics or other social science, or related field
  • Two years of professional experience in quantitative and qualitative research and data analysis using related software such as STATA and Nvivo respectively*
  • Demonstrated research experience including writing abstracts and manuscripts*
  • Experience with fundraising, including writing grant proposals*
  • Cultural sensitivity; ability to interact diplomatically and effectively with staff, partners and community members alike*
  • Ability to prioritize and meet multiple deadlines under pressure*
  • Experience in health and human rights related research
  • Public speaking experience
  • Willingness to work outside the city with limited access to malls, discotheques, or other related social activity
  • Resilience in a highly dynamic working environment
  • Comfort with public speaking before large audiences and debating complex issues
  • Interest in integrating business, technological and social innovations to improve public health
  • Ability to multitask and work with teams as well as individually
  • Interest in understanding the human rights based approach to health
